I was having a look at my rego papers and noticed my engine number starts with J instead of a B. Meaning (I presume) it has an EJ engine in it.
I did suspect it wasn't the original motor, as it runs like a baby, and does look recently painted.
Is there any difference between an EK grey and an EJ grey?
Engine Numbers
cal, j is the ej prefix, b was for fb and ek, L i think was fe fc, and from memory numbers is fx to fj.
Difference is an ej motor is a 138, slightly larger bore that the 132 in the eks, i think they may have bigger values and pistons. Other wise, basically a grey motor anyway.
The gearboxes are different i think too.

master of nothing, leader of nobody.
FX/48/215 series, 132, 1948-1953, no prefix 21HP
FJ series, 132,1953-1956, no prefix
FJ series COMMERCIAL ONLY, 132, late 1956 only, U Code (as these were assembled alongside the FE on the lines and needed to differentiate for Waranty issues)
FE series, 132, 1956-1958, L Code
FC series, 132, 1958-1959, L Code
FB series, 138, 1959-1961, B Code increase in size and up to 25HP
EK series, 138, 1961-1962, B Code
EJ series, 138, 1962-1963, J Code
Cal no major changes from B to J series motors, there are a few MINOR ones, but not worth mentioning unless you are going for an absolutely factory resto.
Some speedway guys chased the "J" series blocks after stories of higher strength and larger Nickel content, but like the Canadian early motors - yet to be proven!
Hope that helps a little

Unless you are an absolute purist it really doesn't matter what engine its got as long as it runs OK , is reliable and your having fun with it.
It's what they did it those days when there were a lot more of the engines around in wrecking yards etc and at a cheap price. It didn't matter what model it came from as long as it was a grey motor and it ran.
My FB had an EK engine in it when I bought it ( no wonder it never ran any good ) before I changed to a 149 and an FB standard I have here has an FJ engine in it.Obviously they were registered and running cars with those engine in them in the past.
The owners would just go buy another one and whack it in and away you go.With a good run you could have an engine out and new one in by the time beer o'clock came around.

I can't think what to write here so this will do.
Re: Engine Numbers
Hullo all. The post I got this from is very old, and would have closed many years ago, but I'm still hopeful that "FB MAD" might be able to see this:

My FJ has an FB engine, and I'm trying to find out as much as I can about it. I've paid $90 to an online voluntary organisation, and got very little out of it. I'm at a dead end. So, I've just stumbled upon the above, and thought I'd ask. "FB MAD", I'm hoping that YOUR FB Standard might be the one that has MY ORIGINAL ENGINE (unable to find the number, but it would have been built in July or August 1954) and MY car might have your engine(B172418) as it came out of an FB station sedan. A V-E-R-Y L-O-N-G shot, but if I don't ask...............!! Any info will be gratefully received, and thanks in anticipation.

Re: Engine Numbers
That is certainly a long shot mate !!! Probably the best you could do would be post over on the FX/FJ website and the gurus over there would be able to give you a fairly close indication of what your engine number would have been then keep an eye out for a rebuildable block in that range. Unless you have the original books in the glovebox there is no real way of knowing the exact engine number that would have been fitted into your car.
I started with nothing and still have most of it left.
