Correct oil capacity for a grey?

Post by Oldnblue »

Hi all
Sounds simple but I want to confirm how much engine oil should be used for a grey. I've always just filled to correct dipstick level, and have never actually found out the exact figure in litres. Stupid I know.
This time around, I thought I'd do it by the book, but am unsure of the volume.
Cheers guys, Scott

Hi Jimmy
I found the same info in my shop manual, but couldn't find a conversion for quarts to litres...might try a google search to see if theres some kind of calculator I can use.

Found a conversion table on the net. 3 quarts equals roughly 2.8 litres.
Guys, does that sound right for oil capacity??? :?:

Without filter - its 3 quarts - 6 pints - 3,600 milli-litres.... 3.6 litres.
Whatever it is, oil change = bring engine to operating temperature, drain, re-fit sump plug, re-fill, run engine a few minutes
and top up to "full" on dip-stick as required.....
Grey's are meant to leak/use oil - if it doesn't..... it's run out..... check regularly...... (wow- there's an argument just waiting to happen.....)

Hi Rosco
That's pretty much my usual method. Thought I'd finally ask what the 'correct' amount is, but the 2.8 litre figure I got when I tried the conversion just seemed a little low.
I think maybe I'll stick to the tried and tested method of filling it until it's full. Seems to have worked ok over the years...

Tim.
Did the overnight drain, and topped up to full this evening after work...total used was a little over 3.8 litres, so your figure seems pretty spot on.

thanks for that,
I know with reds - it can vary a bit - depending on the length of the tube the dip-stick fits into.
If they are not fully pushed "home" into the block - "full" can bee quite a bit more than required.... can't remember if this is the case with greys....

Now that you have measured the volume - you'll know how much to pour in at changes......

I'd still suggest checking the dip-stick before the last litre .... we are all getting older and (don't laugh!) - sometimes four litres comes straight after two....... see what you've got waiting for you in your upcoming years.......
