soda blasting
Some painters will refuse to paint it if they dont do the whole job even the blasting as to warping what pressure are they using?????Way too much by the sounds of it ive seen sand in bedded in to metal from too much pressure and its fine to ask how much warranty will the painter give if he doesnt do the whole job because this is what could happen your paint starts to flake you take it back to the painter he says its the guys who soda blasted the car see where im coming from??
Ive sand blasted car bonnets with not 1 bit of warping doors roofs and never had a warp you get more heat from saing than you do from blast if done the right way.

soda blasting
i have finally found a local guy to soda blast my car. tomorrow is the big day, so will keep you posted as to my thoughts. he has suggested that steam cleaning is the go to remove the soda. i plan to take car to rust repairer straight from soda blaster, rust in inner guards, front rails, surface rust, and a new tunnel for a Trimatic conversion then to be painted, so the coating will be good to keep it from rusting.
A long time in the process but finally beginning to happen!

Caz...just a thought...and I'm not familiar with soda balsting etc...
...doesn't steam cleaning involve water? steam on bare steel doesn't seem like a good idea to me.
Have you asked the rust repairer what he thinks?

I didnt say I was gonna steam clean it....i will definetly talk to the rust man first...he will know how to manage it.
Apparently the soda coat wil prevent rust for awhile while the rust is being done, then i guess they clean and primer it before the final coats. hardest part is finding the right people to do the job without ripping me off.
Soda blasting doesnt take it back to totally bare steel i dont think, it removes paint and surface rust but it wont be silver steel, this is my first experience here, so i hope to hell its the right decision. been a long time coming...

I am a sandblaster and spray painter and I have used soda blasting before.
Me personally I would opt for sandblasting. Provided you don't concentrate too much on the one area at once it is no dramas.
The type of grit you too can make a difference, such as the commonly used garnet is a good option as it removes the rust and paint at a good rate, whereas the old school copper slag, it will tear it off alot faster.
But the grit flow will make a difference.

Wow! I am so happy with the result! I will try and post some pics of how good a job the sodablasting did. He removed all the paint and surface rust and it has reduced my rust repair bill by about $1500. No sand grit, a smooth ready to repair surface! He gave me a good deal as I told him I will spread the word if he is good, and as he is a new business in the area, word of mouth will build his business fast. Now she is off to rust repair and paint shop...the colour is now my dilemma! I have to work out the entire colour scheme to give to painter.

The original colour was grey and white, then it was painted burgundy. Now Im thinking a pearl with a pink or lavender tint as the main colour, and the flash will be a follow through of the tinge as a brighter pearl, if you understand what I mine. Im thinking pink more then lavender. So the flash will be a brighter pink pearl.
Interior, black carpet, seats and door panels, with the pearl hood lining. The interior top of the doors might be the pink and along dash under the black area. I need to fiddle with photshop and see if I can recolour the bits to get the look.
I already have HR front end, 186 motor and will have a trimatic gearbox fitted. Also going to have power steering to make driving a bit easier as this will be my daily driver.
Any thoughts most welcome.

I've got a bloke in the next town to me that sodablasts and sandblasts and he has shown me some of his work.
Sodablasting is great for paint removal and very safe although it doesn't remove all the rusty shit in the rusted areas completely.He says he then uses sand blasting in those rusted ares to remove all the the rusty crap completely and the car is then done.
Good thing about soda blasting is that is doesn't have to be primed ASAP as the soda leaves a very fine alkaline protective coating that protects it from further rusting for quite a long period providing it is kept in the shed away from rain it can remain in bare metal for a long period until you are ready to prime over the bare metal.
He showed me his HK GTS Monaro which he sodablasted over 12 months ago and the stored in his shed with one of them protective KMart type car covers.
It is still bare metal and hasn't surface rusted one bit!!

When I did my car I had never even driven an FB or EK, just liked the shape, so I did the car the color that suited me and got the look I wanted , and I have had people come up to me on quite a few occasions and say "what did you paint it that color for" like I wrecked it or something .
Since then I have grown to really appreciate the factory colors (not because of the comments) and think they look great as they are, just look ing at all the great cars on this web site has opened my eyes to how good they look in their factory colors , Trev .
