Obviously not going to the right ones Cal!!!

I can still walk into the panel shop that did my old car anytime for a chat, but they don't just do smash repairs. They also do resto's and have an interest in old cars. Father son business too. So the attitude is not like alot of shops. The qoute will tell you if they are keen or not.
Speed and Style........... One day I'll get the speed bit.

Hey Cal,

Have you thought about a TAFE course?

Check out this link:

Not sure where in Sydney you are, but this one is (afaik) only offered at St George TAFE - about 5 min drive from the airport. It costs about $460 for 9 weeks (3 hrs per week).

I did x2 semesters a few years back now at this campus, and it was excellent. You have a teacher there to help you (normally some old ex-spraypainter with heaps of experience). They supply all the paint (2pak or acrylic), the spray booth, spray guns, masks, tape - everything! Its a great course, highly recommended.

Sounds expensive, but it works out at about $50 a week (less than $20 hour) ... so actually pretty cheap (although years ago, it used to be $110 for the whole year!).

There are still spaces left for next semester starting 22 July, I'm thinking about doing it again ...

Cheers
Jamie

most pannel shops these days are like you said cal only interested in doing quick easy fix (that they can charge an arm and a leg for) for joe average that doesn't really give a rats arse about there car
they see a car like yors and straight away it's just going to be a hassle for them as far as they are concerned you'll want perfection not just good enough
you have to find the right place and workers where it's not "just a job"

i'll PM a No of a guy that does "back yard" jobs he's out londonderry way nice bloke does a great job and gives a shit about his work

I know of lots of panel shops that charge shit loads for insurance work, and do fast, but average work. Quality is just on par with manufactures or below.
So when it comes to getting in old cars that need to be restored they think they can charge you even more, The quality is non the better just the price is more exey. (Cause to them they can pump out a lot more for less and charge the earth and guarantee that they get it.)

And thats where you need to find the classic body shop, where time is lasting and the attention to detail is infinite. Its these type of body builders that will look after your car and you pay for what you get and not for what you don't want. They pride themselves on reputation than doing it fast.
I have seen it first hand in both instances and there are quite a few achievers here on this site.

And mind you in saying all of this, there are a few non qualified personnel here on this site that would put lots of Paint'n'Panel shops to shame................and if finances are tight it maybe a good idea to scour the post on this site here to track a few down and have a chat.
