Great stuff, can someone bring an engine.
As I think that is what's wrong.

Was going to put a new kit through the carby today, but thought it may be another waste of time and money.............

Hi Finny, this happened to me quite a few years back. Tried everything and .....

It was the Muffler. The baffle had moved internally and blocked of the exhaust under load!

Maybe have someone put their hand over the tail pipe when it revs or idles.

Hopefully that's the problem.

Thanks Steve, will try that one, would disconnecting the exhaust at the manifold allow it to rev properly ?

Finny, it sounds like the carby pump, the carby accelerator pump operates of the injects fuel when you open the throttle, if the pump is u/s then the motor stalls/splutters due to a lean mix. the standard carby kit comes with a new accelerator pump..... here are some pics, the pump is circled: (hope it helps)

I"ll go with a crook accel pump plunger, I think it was just coincidental that you swapped carbies for the same scenario, as there are to many variables, like poor gasket sealing between the two, carby disturbance and sediment problems.

OK. I'm happy to go with what ever works, or at least identify what the cause is.

I'm pretty well available any time, just let me know when is the best time.

Tim, rims are still there waiting...............

I need the bottom end done, so it's either a new motor or strip it down and rebuild it myself. But I really didn;t want to go that far.

Now that I remembered I already had another grey motor in the parts car, I'll test it for compression and suitability.

So back to the not reving issue.

Should a get the kit and redo the carby ? If I'm going to keep a grey, then that probably makes sense.

Check that the pump plunger actuating shaft isn't binding in the carby body because that can cause an otherwise working plunger to not work properly .

I've seen a few carbies with bent plunger actuating shafts that bind in the carby body and will stop a brand new plunger from working.

God knows how they get bent in the first place ??
I can't think what to write here so this will do.
