Any tips on exhaust upgrade?

Hey all.
Well, I spent a bit of time checking over the car today and have decided that the exhaust is in need of replacement. There' a fair bit of rust there, holes in some areas of the pipe and just generally old and tired.
Having never owned a grey before this car, I was wondering what folks would suggest as a suitable replacement/upgrade...from the headers right back to the tail pipe.
I searched through the forums but couldn't seem to find much discussion on this topic. Even tried other sites like the FEFC forums but most seemed to have very little when it came to grey motor exhaust.
Has anyone had any experience here they'd like to share or any suggestions on what would be suitable?
The engine is totally standard, no mods, only a re-condition not too long ago. Still running original headers etc. I'd obviously like to enable the engine to breath as well as it can, and if possible, accentuate the natural sound of the grey. I've heard (supposedly) unmodded greys that sounded fantastic...I think much better than most reds.

This ones easy!

Extractors or Jack Myers Headers, Straight through muffler and 2" pipe from front to back.
Go stainless if your feeling rich or want a long lasting system.

Thanks for that. I use pretty much the same exhaust set-up on my EH (although pipes are 2 1/4) and am pretty happy with the performance...just wasn't sure if the greys begged for something different to be at their best.
I'll book it in for this week.

I've had Jack Myers headers recommended to me before...from what I understand, they're pretty hard to come by. I'll be keeping my eyes open at swap meets etc.

I've fitted tuned length extractors 2'' pipe with the box at the rear like the toranas had with chrome tip fitted, allows me to be low and not worry about speed humps.

Had a new system installed today. I ended up, as suggested, going with a 2" pipe and straight through muffler, with a chrome tip to neaten it up a little at the back. Unfortunately I couldn't afford to go stainless throughout but will look at that next time it's on the cards.

As soon as I started her up I could feel the change in the way the grey breathed, and out on the road it was like driving a different car. So much smoother and with a nice throaty little burble to keep me entertained.

Ok, after going for a decent drive, I've noticed that the car pops and spits a bit (mainly on decelleration coasting down hills). Is that to be expected with a straight through, or is there potentially a leak in the exhaust?

The "pops and spits" is unburn't exhaust gases and you will most likely hear them more with a straight through system than with a traditional exhaust system.A had an FC Wagon years ago and went from a standard system to a single hotdog muffler and noticed the same thing.

A leak can cause the pop as well but would probably have to be a substantial leak which you would hear distinctly.Enjoy the pops and spits, its all part of it.
