drive shaft question
hi all, when fitting a red 186 and trimatic into FB, what drive shaft would be needed to fit the original diff, or would one have to be made up for it? thanks guys.

G'day Fark,
Haven't done 186/trimatic to FB.
I think Trev runs 179/trimatic so maybe Trev might be able to answer your question.
I'd imagine that the 186/tri combo would be longer than original grey/3 speed combo so I'd guess that it would be a matter of shortening your original shaft to suit if that were the case.
Don't know if the spline in the original FB front yoke will slide into the tri output shaft or not.
I would recommend a diff ratio change with 186/tri as the orig 3.89 FB diff screams at highway speed.
I run a 149 red ( bored out to 167 cubes though) and 3 speed manual with 3.08 red motor centre and it still gives me enough power to drive around town OK and some good legs on the highway with added better fuel economy.
Depends on what kind of driving/economy you want to have i guess.
I've got a 138 red and trimatic combo in the shed so can measure the length of them if that helps. Can also see if FB tailshaft front yoke will slip into trimatic output shaft if you want.

I can't think what to write here so this will do.

hydromatics don't have a torque convertor unless it's a turbo hydramatic more commonly refered to as turbo 350/400 if it's one of these you'de have an adaptor plate, so i'm pretty sure you have a trimatic which if yor going to use an ausie 4 speed is good for you as t/shaft, gearbox crossmember and speedo cable are all interchangeable between the 2
unless you have a powerglide 2 speed auto then speedo cable is different
