Easy ways to break a windscreen ?

Post by Finny »

I would like to remove the front screen as part of my re-build, but I probably don't have to. I know the process for removing and fitting the front windscreen, however I am concerned about breaking it, as I seem to have had a bad run of luck so far.

Would be interesting to hear how many successful remove/refits have been done, and also how many failures / cracked screens. :P

Also do you have to replace the rubber seal with a new one, or has anyone successfully used the old one. Its still very flexible and seems in good condition?

Is it a laminated screen, or toughened.

Didn't look to be honest. I'll check it next time I go down. The originals were all toughens weren't they :?: But I'm not sure if it's the original, unlikely because the seal looks very good and I thought it had been replaced. I'll check.

Hit it with a hammer. If it's a toughened screen it'll shatter into a million bits.

If it's a laminated one there will be a lots of big cracks going everywhere.

That's how you tell

Nah only joking Finny,

Finny?

Finny??

Come back with that hammer Finny, I was only joking .......

Hey FB, sorry I had to go down to the car to check.

I knew you were joking, you have to hit it with a crow bar, not a hammer

It's toughened (It shattered into thousands of little bits) but I had to hit it several times.

PS How do I put them back together again. :) :D :)

PSS Only kiding. :P I know, have already started with the superglue.

PSSS Back to my main question. Still haven't checked mine.

if it's toughened glass you should have no dramas at all sitting on the front seat put you feet on the screen and push it out, if laminated don't try this it will break
here's another tip re:smashing toughened screens from the outside you can belt the crap out of them and usually won't break, but should only take a light tap from the inside, it's in the way they're designed

I remember a very annoying mosquito on the front sindscreen of a HQ I owned, tried to squash him on the inside  , cracked the screen from top to bottom  (laminated) Really annoying thing, I missed him.

Checked out the windscreen today, not one thing on it to say what it is. The back one is toughened, but the front has no info. I'm going to guess laminated just to be safe.

Finny, i took my laminated screen out the same way you do with toughened glass, lift rubber on a corner inside while pushing steadily but firmly with boot against screen from inside.
It has been back in the ute for 5 years-gets driven every day plus has a few stone chips,

Thanks guys, just wish I still had a front seat in it to push against.

Can you re-use the old rubber ?
