Red motor
Re: Red motor
You’re going to have to fabricate something, as answered on Facebook. As I also said, SA is I think the only state where you will be able to register the car, providing you upgrade the front brakes to EJ self energising setup.

Re: Red motor
Welcome to the forum mate, it can be done easily enough but not sure if it will be legal when you are done ? Are you going to reregister the car with a red motor ? Ordinarily part of the approval process involves a disc brake balljoint front end conversion, it is possible to fit discs to a king pin front but its a lot of fiddling around. Pete Mallaby makes reproduction engine mounts that you can weld on, the usual trick is to bolt the mounts to the new engine, lower it into the car and set up exactly where you want it to be, tack the mounts in and remove the engine to fully weld.

Re: Red motor
Pete’s mounts will be too short for the original crossmember, and will need extensions welded on the bottoms.

Re: Red motor
Thinking I might get the reproduction hr mounts and go from there, but unsure. I can fabricate etc just thought I’d ask before I went ahead.

Re: Red motor
I reckon it would be easiest to start with a set of those mounts, the front of them at least will sit on the crossmember, you may need to fab up some filler pieces for the back of them. You using the original gearbox ???

Re: Red motor
Not quite sure yet, it’s an auto body, and came with the original 138 (pulled down) and hydromatic. Was thinking I’d put a manual behind the 186.

Re: Red motor
Hydramatic body is a good starting point as you can fit M20 or Trimatic, and use the original tail shaft. Original crossmember is quite different shape to HR though. Sure, you can adapt Peter Mallaby’s mounts, if you really end up using original, but I would be doing some research on rego requirements first.

Re: Red motor

Here is a shot of the engine mounts I did on original crossmember for 186 in my FB ute. As you can see they don’t touch the sides like on the HR. Later I went to HR disc front and used Pete Mallaby’s mounts.

Re: Red motor
No measurements really, just dummied up with 186 bolted to crash box and front of crank centred to the semi circular cut out in the front of the subframe. Only way to do it first off unless someone has a jig, but that would usually be for HR crossmember anyway.
