2 Speed Preslite Wiper Motor swap

Post by smclaren »

Hey Guys

I've picked up a 2 speed Preslite wiper motor (tested and working) .... I'm keen to swap out the original single speed job.

I have researched how to swap them over ... can't seem to find anything about swapping the motor itself. Lots of info on the Commodore wiper motor upgrade ... but not this.

Anyone got the steps for the actual wiper removal/swap please ? Can I assume the Preslite wiper motor is a straight swap ?

I did find a post from @Blacky recommending the new Cole Hersee 4 way switch (which I've ordered, thanks Blacky), the bezel/knob swap and the wiring. So that all good ... but it's the motor swap out that I have never done, that I could use some tips on. The links/wiper arm mechanism and stuff has me being a bit cautious.

Thanks as usual, Legends

I reckon that will bolt up to single speed mounting plate Steve. A photo of the other side would help. I’m not sure about the switch but I wonder if you should be using a two position earth switching one from HR etc, rather than the later positive switching one you have purchased. I have a few of the HR type, which I would be willing to swap if this be the case.

Thanks Errol

Sorry for the delay ... was cleaning/painting the new unit.

As requested, here are a couple of photo's of the mounting side.

Does it look like the OE unit ? Any tips on "how to" for the mechanical swap would be very much appreciated.

Just to describe the current power/switch setup ... i note an earth wire connected straight from the unit to the mounting bracket. I also note the two posts on the current unit ...a brown wire (power) and a black wire (assuming to the switch).

The current switch has a single pole for the black wire from/to the unit.

The new Preslite unit has three electrical posts ... can I assume an Earth to the mounting bracket and two posts back to the two speed switch ? Had a quick look at a HR and EJ type switches and see they have three posts ... so alternatively could it be earth and two speed wires back to the switch from the Preslite ?

Steve

Can’t comment of mounting of the two speed wiper motor. I’m only running original single speed motor. My thoughts on wiring is as per picture. Unless someone else can confirm motor connections you may need a multi meter to check continuity. When the motor is in the “park” position one of those terminals will not have a circuit to the motor body (earth). The remaining two terminals will be low and high speed.

But those who have done the conversion will confirm for you. Hope this helps.
Regards
Stephen

Forgot to add mounting of the motor to metal will give you the earth.

2 Speed Preslite Wiper Motor swap

Thanks for the photo Steve. Unbolt your single speed motor from the alloy mounting bracket, and bolt that one in its place.

The earth strap is to park the wipers, so when you switch off the single speed wipers you isolate the motor from ground, earth, 0V, but the blades need to travel back to rest.

On the terminals I would havre thought one terminal to power and two to switch. Position 1 will earth the low speed circuit and 2 will bring in an extra winding. The lster ones are fifferent, being positive switched.

Thanks Stephen ... I appreciate that schematic. Its very helpful and pretty accurate after a closer inspection of the motor terminals ... being Battery, Switch 1 and Switch 2 (see photo below)

Errol ... thanks for the fitment confirmation. Good to know it's a straight bolt on. I'll ping you a PM regarding that HR switch and organise a swap for the Cole Hersee unit.

Just missing a 2nd speed and wiper parking ... but that will come with a 2 speed switch.

Thanks Errol & Stephen

HD HR wiring diagramImage
Which is identical to EH and very similar to EJ Premier, which is when the two speed motor became an option, then standard from EH.

I hope I haven’t spoken out of turn regarding the Cole Hershee switch, which may have done the job.

I have three different switch types here. This one definitely came from a HR.Image
It has 5 terminals, the centre one being for the washer. I get open circuit between the switch body and top terminal in the photo below in position 1.Image

In position 2 I get open circuit between the next two terminals to the left, as well as the switch body (0V, ground, earth). To me this says you may need to connect wiper 1 to two of the terminals if you want it to get power in both positions. The last or bottom terminal, and the centre terminal both appear open circuit go each other and ground when the squirted button rod is pressed. Hope this gets you sorted and I will post it off now.
