A few (six  ) years back one of the Mandurah lumpy humpy guys gifted me an alloy timing cover. This will allow me the option to bolt up ancilliaries (fuel pump or dry sump pump) to the snout of the cam. Need the alloy to be rigid enough to bolt to... the pressed tin factory timing cover is not up to it.

It needed a bit of clearancing, as it was made for a boat (where the factory water pump is not used). Time now to rework the seal to get it to mate up to the Ross balancer, then to mate up the fuel pump to the front of it. Still need to work out how to locate and drill the hole in the front to 10 thou tolerance.

If anyone else has an alloy cover they would like to sell please let me know - I promise to give it a good home in the FED :).

A bloke walks into a bearing shop with a bag of trouble…

With the timing cover on, I need to think about sealing the crank. The alloy cover is about 2.5” diameter OD on the crank seal, much bigger than standard. It is designed to seal this marine thrust assembly discussed here:

So I took the old seal, some limitations on what it could be, added some dry sump pump bearings and seals (more on that later), and took the bag of trouble to the bearing shop. A terrible mix of metric, imperial, and torn bits.

The bloke behind the counter could not read the bearing or seal numbers any clearer than I could without magnification, and smiled when I said “grey motor”. These are good signs.

They were patient with me, and now I have a bag of solutions, including a crank seal. Special alloy timing cover compared to standard seals below:

Got one of the two dry sump pumps cleaned up and rebuilt. This one had come off a grey motor on a boat. No idea who made it. It runs counter-clockwise (i.e. cam drive, not crank drive).
