Starting an old engine

Post by Trev »

I'm going to put an old red that has been sitting for over a year in my car, it turns over by hand.
Was told it was a great motor when I bought it off someone that I know.
Any tips on what to do while the engine is out? Thanks Trev 8).

Replace the seals and gaskets to difficult to get at when engine is in the car.... Especially cork and rubber, most of the synthetic type last pretty well..

The rubber and cork may have hardened over time. :(

Hi Trev,
I'd replace all the Welch plugs with brass ones - if not already done.
Would suggest giving the cooling system a good blow out whilst at it - if it hasn't been stored with coolant in it (most don't) there will be a build up of scale and rust by now.

Probably drain whatever oil is left in it and change the oil filter - I'd do this just in case little "hlepers" have inadvertently added the cheaper H20 top up or worse..................
If you are going to do the gaskets - a good scour and clean of the sump won't go unappreciated.

Take the opportunity to give it a real good look at whilst it's out - but you are going to miss something - trust me, we always do.

That's all I can think of at present, but there's sure to be more - others will add to my suggestions....

frats,
Rosco
