The whole "parts in the house" thing is getting out of hand. I need less kids cars in the driveway to make some space. My cunning plan to rebuild the shed with a hoist has likely hit a snag... council's maximum roof height is 2.6m.

Picked up the angle drives from the machinist. I had one working McGee ally one, another McGee that needed the shaft machining and one brass repro one that needed a whole new shaft. All three now up and running.

I had once wanted to run the pump off the vertical end of the angle drive, but with my little McGee pump failing I did not have a pump short enough (clash with Repco inlet manifold). In conversation with the machinist he suggested I could run a pump off the end of the horizontal magneto. This is clever, as it saves trying to cam-drive it. Checked that there is no clash with the FED engine plate, and it will fit…. just. So pump, maggie and one angle drive back to the machinist.

I then woke up at 2am in a cold sweat… putting the pump on the other side of the angle drive reverses rotation… could I reverse the bigger McGee pump? For once I won - they are readily reversible. Pump off to the injection whisperer to get flowed in the reverse direction.

Guessing that's to tow the pipe rack around, I would have thought the axle would have been a little further back ?
I started with nothing and still have most of it left.

Would have loved the axle more rearward, and tow the FED facing forward but the trailer mob were not keen. They have to register each design, so lots of fiddly paperwork to prove it's safe. Suspect they took their existing tilt-trailer design and tweaked it.

90% of the time it will be towing the 5km to Eastern Creek, but nice to know it will handle a run up to say Willowbank at a pinch. Should get a few smiles towing an open trailer'd FED through Sydney Peak hour.

Now I need to resist the temptation to replace the trailer wheels. Three skinny Sampson Magnums in &*#@ stud pattern...

Time to get a bit more serious with the oiling system for the FED. It will run a wet sump, so a pump is in order. I had a tray of oily, manky oil pumps sitting around that I pulled out in my hunt for a suitable crank... six of them. One is somewhat different to the others (different mesh screen and screen base, body casting different). I assume this is early humpy, so put it aside. I had bought two oil pump overhaul kits many years ago, so hoping that out of the five candidates I can make two good ones - one for the FED, and a spare.

Stripped them down, finding the normal signs of six decades of abuse. Bent and torn mesh screens, split pins replaced with a wire twist, screen clips replaced with wire, body screws replaced with hex bolts, body screw heads mauled, spring retainer replaced with a washer. No signs of the springs being repacked with extra washers. Gave them a scrub in fuel, then another sloosh in clean fuel. Not perfect, but clean enough to examine them without catching a disease. Some wear in the bottom of some of the springs where they have been rubbing on something, one of the relief valves had had a very bad day and was mauled.

Measured them up as per the below. Looks like one pump will be serviceable with just a clean, and I'll use the two kits to make another two up. The backlash appears to be the real killer on these.

Chassis is home :) . Mostly disassembled, so begins the process of screwing it back together.

With the trailer drawbar under the bench, it fits in the shed… just.
