Ammo's Ute

I ended up getting some new springs made at wheelman springs - they now have a very good spring that can be used as a single spring to replace the dual springs.

There was a bloke a while back selling repro heavy-duty springs in stainless. I bought a set, and couldn't be happier. He has sadly since dropped off the radar.

Do you have contact details for Wheelman Springs (I tried Googling, and came up empty). Wouldn't mind calling them to see if they can do a heavy-duty spring in stainless. The bonnet on Grace's ute has tried to brain me a few times.

I have replacement springs, that I have decided to paint black so they contrast with the inners.
Zinc plating can induce hydrogen embrittlement but to remove you “bake them at 375 to 430 °F (190 to 220°C) “.
Ironically across the road for the zinc plater is a spring manufacturer.

My sedan has single outer’s only but the ute has dual springs ???
I’m sure someone know why.

The inner ones are a helper spring - aftermarket jobs from ebay generally

Ammo's ute is in go slow mode now that I'm up country helping on my brother in-laws property.
We have nearly 16 km's of fencing still to do plus a shit load of lambs to tag, nut and tail.
Learning to drive a big wheel loader to clear scrub and now he has purchased an old Cat grader that need some repairs.

I have solved the ute lid issue with a small spring as the poppers were just not lifting it enough.

Started on the under seat tray which is proving to be challenge.
Limited space and a trans tunnel plus the raised hump in the floor.

Clay saw me playing witt the metal side covers for the bench seat, that I will modify to fit on the Mazda BT50 bench seat.
Only in the think stage at the moment.

I have a little head scratching time looking and the tail gate hinges again but no progress.

You've done a great job on the hard lid. I reckon you should just glue a 5mm sheet of ally on the frame and polish.

Sorry Clay, the hard cover will have black vinyl finish, possibly padded but not a polished finish.

I rejigged the poppers to the back corners to improve the lift. A little more the clean up the welds, etc.

I have sorted the gas struts and just need to weld the mounting lugs.
My my argon bottle is at Retro Richard's place, new thread coming.

Hi all,
It has been a little while since I post any progress on Ammo’s ute but I have completed a few things of late.

Under seat sliding tray required the lowering of the floor hump for clearance and manufacturing some brackets.
I’m happy with the results.

I was not going to put in a radio as such but as the ute is for Anne-Marie I softened.
Reluctantly cut holes in the inner guard and added spare headlight buckets. Not new idea but a goody.

Front seat is Mazda T50 that will lose the centre holes when it is re-covered.
I wanted to dress up the sides so I took a couple of the metal side covers for an EK old seat and cut them up.
I hear the groans and mumbled comments but as Clay quiet eloquently pointed out, I’m a bloody hot rodder.

Surprisingly what looks like a fairly quick and simple task, takes a lot longer to complete but progress.

Still on it but slow going.
I have completed the bloody handbrake setup.
Ended up using a combination of short RH cable and change the knob to suit the balance plate.
The LH side is a part original and Laser for the wreckers.

It would have been easy to do a centre mount or even easier to leave the original setup but I now have the cables tucked up to the body.

Little progress on the tailgate hinges but I did try using the upper tailgate hinge from a HQ van.
These there too big and did not have the correct arc.

I like the handbrake lever setup, like a HQ style. Works well with the Mazda seat by the look. You are getting there. What’s the hurry right?
