Rare Spares front windscreen rubber - volunteer needed.

Yeah it is a lot if you try to fit one of the crud ones - screen in and out and in again is several hours in itself - not done super carefully and you can damage trim or hood liner or god forbid paint.
Hope they really have sorted it - have to give credit where credit is due to rares - very hard to restore these old girls without them as nos rubbers are generally non existent or useless

One good thing about re-fitting mine is the trim across bottom wasnt centred so did not have good cover from one corner peice - impossible to move when in place so as above check the corners all line up well and put a black texta mark on the screen where it starts and finishes so you can see if it moves during fitting and you can still catch it

So it wasn't that difficult just a bit time consuming and adrenaline rushing in case I broke it !!!

The trim on the top wont sit exactly how i want it so if anyone can show me a photo of trim down the pillar that would be good.

It is strange that the trim sat this way on the glass with the small gap at the top centre and now seems to be to close. I can move it around and its a bit better than the photo but still not quite right.
The bottom sits perfect and the gap is uniform all round so happy with that.

So the verdict ? The trim not fitting right on the top could be a couple of things 1/ The bottom trim sits on the plenum screws and wont allow the glass to come down any further or 2/ the glass is slightly different shape in that area at the top roof corners. The reason I say that is because that's the way it sat when on the glass only. Like I said I can move it around slightly and will try and massage it some more during the week. The other disadvantage is its cold so the rubber is still a bit stiff, I would like to get it in the sun and see if I can move the trim around still.
I think the rubber is fine and it sits very nicely on the inside of the car and looks to be similar to the original, unfortunately due to some variables its not easy to blame one thing or another. The true test would be for an original screen in a car with original trim.

I will not be removing it any time soon as the screen is laminated and will surely break unless I cut the rubber so it will have to do at the moment.
I would not hesitate using this rubber again as it was strong and didn't give me any issues pulling it in.

Greg’s hole looks okay. Not a bad thing to pull the top down as it can sit proud of the roof sometimes.

By your second photo I reckon the top left wants to come away from the centre 1/4” at most. Last photo seems to support this. May be the angle, but looks like the gap in the middle is pretty narrow, and bottom end of offending trim may be tad high. Does corner garnish cover the end? How does the hole line up in the corner? Hopefully you can wriggle and pull it in with the screw. This is why I like the old zone toughened screens, you can whip them back out and tweak.

Great work and thanks for documenting. I note your placement of sealant bead on outer edge. Did you use the Wurth Dab Off?

It was interesting watching Jim the Windscreen Whisperer put my zone toughened one in, and Grace's too. He had to smack the glass around with the heel of his hand quite a few times to get it to where he wanted it.

We definiteley need a photo from a few metres back please... once the screen is in, they really start looking like a car again.

Mucked around with late this arvo and got it a tad better. I'm putting it down to the glass curve at the top just not 100% but close.

Yes Wurth on the edges only where the rubber sits so its not a waste and messy. Tested it for leaks and there is none.

I know its the glass that is not quite right but i'm happy and it will be hard to pick anyway.

Is it sitting nice and flat on the inside Greg - this is where the biggest issue I found with the old ones - they ended up all wrinkly

It sits really well actually nice big square block of rubber as per the original.

Apart from the smallish gap in the trim its near perfect.

I loved doing this today it was such a challenge especially being laminated, I just plodded pushed and slapped took about 3/4 of an hour to put it in in the end.

The laminated screen that was put in my sedan for my mate after he broke the old one never fitted right. I'm obviosly carrying a grudge. That car had four different screens in it. Two were smashed at 110 on the highway and the lam one I cracked taking out to try and fit right. I have seen 1/8" variation in zone toughened screens and more in bodies.

You may be able to work the rubber and trim in to the corner without distorting the outer aseating on the glass, then the screw will help hold it good.

A bloke who started his working life as a panel beater said they often had to push FB/EK roof up in the middle top where the rubber goes with a pneumatic ram to allow screens to fit!
