The cost of chrome and zinc

Post by Brett027 »

Just thought it might be helpful to share some current electroplating costs to members. It might help explain why cars are getting dear to buy. Thousands of dollars just to make a sparkle.

Chrome:
Front bumper corner sections: $300 each
Front and rear bumper mid sections $300 each
Ute bumperettes: $300 each
EK Bonnet Bar: $500
FB Bonnet Bar: $600 (were some rust repairs)
EK front bumper over-riders: $130 each (includes straightening out a dent on each one)
Horn Ring: $150
EK Instrument cluster: $300
Boot lock key surround $60
Gear lever: $55
Head lamp surrounds: $330 each
Tail light: $300
Zinc:
Bonnet Hinges: $40 each
Bonnet Lock: $65
Boot locking plate: $40
Hand brake cable runners: $20 for set

Yeah it sure does add up - when I did my ute 10 years ago I got every bit of chrome except the quarter windows plus all the die cast bits including bonnet budgie done for $810
I started with nothing and still have most of it left.

not to do with chrome, fools are paying big money for the cars so people are asking big money, it's always been kind of expensive for things you can't do yourself whether that be chrome, mechanical, paint or trim
sometimes yor just better off shitting in yor hands and clapping

A couple of things, apart from the environmental factor chrome has always been expensive, this is part of the reason since the late seventies cars don't have any. Plastic is just cheap to make so that's what we are blessed with now, grilles bumpers lights etc.

Also if you are wanting chrome to be done give it plenty of time, I am just abut to pick up all my die cast pieces that have been in the shop since December last year !!!!!

I'm a bit luckier than you Greg. About 3 weeks for me each time I save up and take some bits down. I'm getting a return customer discount now too😢

Queanbeyan company, Electroplating Technology.. Can't recommend them enough. They will straighten dints on bumpers and over riders, replace missing pins on white metal and do a great job of the plating. I don't know if they are cheap or expensive, but they are quick, dependable and do a superb job.

Yes indeed. And the good thing about Bungendore is you're maybe a quarter-hour away from Queanbeyan.

I’ll always try and find decent original stuff, but doesn’t need to be perfect. Near side bumperette is a mighty challenge though.
