i also removed the vent flap and gave the gutters a blow out and vacuum whilst i removed about 3 gumtrees from the the ducting/guttering under the dash i was stoked to find not a ounce of rust also got my hand up under and around the front glass from inside and could feel anything.
The cable was seized on the flap so i pulled it apart and gave it a clean and some paint ,Does anybody know if new seals are available for the vent flat im guessing they were more a foam seal than rubber?

I need to reinstall the dash air vent frame and also the firewall plates the go around the steer column, when i removed them the y seemed to have a black silicone seal but they weren't to stuck like actual silicone would do. Is there a special type of not so sticky sealer for these things.

Im pretty sure it wasn't a perished rubber seal so i would think something like a mastic.
Ill give butyl mastic a search, now that i know what title search for.
Cheers for that Blacky

I grabbed some of the mastic it worked a treat .
I removed the manual column and am cleaning up the auto one to go in.

Question
Does anyone have pics of the handbrake bracket location under the vehicle when a auto or new gear box cross member is installed?

Regarding I have to choose a diff center / ratio i have the original fb grey 3.86? And my old man has a tall 2.89? lsd and a 3.55 open to choose from . Im not fussed on the lsd side of things .
Im running fresh as mild 161 ,torana trimatic and 205 70 14 tyres on the back.
The fb is just a cruiser not for king burnout comps or racing as such
Id like to put the 2.89? So its not reving its box off on the free way but am worried with the tall tires it might be to doughy and and an unnecessary pig on fuel always heavy under load. Or with the taller treads would the 3.55 be a better option for street cruising and all rounder.
What diff and tyres did the vb commodore with a 6 red and trimatic run.
Thanks fellas

3.89 is original, I had a 161 with 3.36 ratio it was nice all round.
I think the 2.89 wouldn't suit those tyres and motor, go with the 3.55 or get a 3.36.

Yep, 3.55:1 would be the best out of what you have there

In will go the 3.55 and see how it goes can always hunt another and change it later on.

Out with the manual column and layed it next to the auto one, the manual one i had converted to work the trimatic and it worked fine but having a auto column in the shed and a light for the quadrant and the no start in gear black switch thing will be much easier for rego.
Image

The difference between the early and later ek auto lock outs see the extra cut outs.
Image

So i was missing the auto selector gear knob, i have a spare manual gear lever and noticed the difference in size compared to the manual lever in the column.
Any more info on the size difference is one a ek and one fb or is the smaller one of a auto orignially and someone has put it on a manual one :?: , any ways the thread is the same so i put the small one on my auto selector. notice the pivot hole on the auto is different to the manual type.
Image

There was a crack in the column housing near the rod connecting selector so i ground a channel in the crack and welded it up and buzzed it back, sanded the column down and gave it a re spray. it turned out nice so back in the fb it went with a new column rubber under the dash. now to re do the selector rod to the box.
Image

Removing the indicator level thinking it was threaded led me to snapping it in half i didnt even have much force on it :esurprised: then after some investigation and horn ring removal i found the grub screw
So does any one have a indicator stick im not sure if the auto is different to the manual ?

What is the deal with the clutch hole on the fire wall with the factory autos, did that not have the holes cut out or did holden have a blank plate over the hole.? :?:

Would anybody have a steering wheel in better condition than mine. :?:

Autos have a blanking plate. A bit agricultural looking.

I did the same conversion a few years ago using a trimatic shift gate from a HJ. What binnacle are you using for the selector indicator? I hear HR power glide does the job but might look a bit non stock.

Im not sure what you mean by binnacle
i do have a complete hq trimatic column shift with the gate its close but i was told by Roger how to modify the ek gate for a trimatic but i cant see how it will lock in reverse. Maybe anyone who has put the trimatic kit behind there grey could elaborate :?:

The bit that tells you what gear you are selecting. Trimatic is PRND21 whereas hydramatic is PDLNR from memory.

Just tek-screwed HQ -Z gate to the column and modified selector tab to fit the gate.
