sub-frame

Post by rosco »

Matty,
it would depend on how much damage is done to yours.

I believe Rare's do stock some repair sections............

Finding a sub-frame in excellent condition is going to be a heavy task for you - unless you are extremely lucky............ hope someone on the site can help...................

If it's the section in which I think your's may be rusted, I can't offer any advice on how to repair it - others will jump in and do this......... I'm not qualified at all to advise on this - I haven't had a go at this - yet.....

There will be structural/auto body work repair places who can replace what is gone and you are right in asking for advice here.............

For those who want my opinion on how to preserve a good sub-frame, I'll offer these few words from my experiences.

My original sub-frame EK 11097-M rusted out in the front left corner.
My investigation showed that some of the crud, leaves and anything else which entered through the grill usually found its way into the sub-frame through the two 1" holes immediately in front of the radiator each side of the cut-out for accessing a harmonic balancer, where the bolts to the out-rigger are accessed.

The left side of our cars is more vunerable due to usually being parked at kerbs which have a camber sloping to the gutter..................

I am unsure for FB, but on my original sub-frame there were two small drain holes underneath at each outer corner - these were blocked.

I further found that the front section of the sub-frame sits much lower than where the cross-member is attached - this gives any build up of crud no chance to escape....................

When I fitted my replacement sub-frame (1982 - reason car was modified) it came from an FB but was almost new. There weren't any markings on it except for someone attempting to "stamp" the original FB id into the skirt and to this day don't know if it is FB or EK - someone on this forum may be able to help identify it - I think it was then NOS and had been supplied by a crash-repairer just before the rear of the FB it came from was totalled.

I sprayed fishoil into the frame many times over, allowing it to dry at different angles over probably a couple of months whilst the rest of the modification was going on.

After fitting it to the vehicle, I fitted two 1" rubber caps (the type with a recess around the circumference) to those out-rigger holes.
The aim of this was to keep out the nasty's from entering that front box section.

I also drilled a number of drain holes into the front underside of the front section.

There are two drain passageways under the stone-tray in the top of the sub-frame - remember to keep these clear when you give your vehicle a clean-up.
When I fitted the stone-tray, I adhered a very thin (less than 1mm) neoprene gasket between it and the top of the sub-frame to prevent abrasion from grit etc. which that location would surely attract.

I also fitted neoprene covers to the joints and gaps where the sub-frame legs attach to the body and rubber plugs to the holes. I made sure however, that there was ample drainage at the rear of the legs.

To seal out road crud, I used butyl-mastic and primed/top coated everything to blend in with the rest of the under body.
With the top hat sections under the floor, I caulked the gaps and likewise painted them.

I drilled drain holes in every possible section under the car and finally sprayed fishoil into every cavity many, many times using a flexible dip tube with multi-angled tip.

To avoid battery spillage getting into the top l/hs corner of the sub-frame I welded a small tube to the base of the battery box floor to drain away any caustic fluid/powder outside the engine bay. This tube then passes through the hole in the top of the sub-frame skirt.

I cut the outlet of the tube at 45 degrees (similar to that of the engine side cover breather) with the view that it would draw on the tray of the battery box..............

Done it again - havent' I?

Sorry Matty, don't know where there is one - wishing you every success in your search..................

sorry folk.............

frats,
Rosco

Matty they aint an "easy" item to keep as a spare due to the size of them.

If ya get stuck and need to purchase one , you can try the wreckers out at riverstone. Give me a ring and ill get ya the info, too late (and dangerous) to go rummaging in the bedroom for my wallet with the missus asleep.

They have about 5 ek/fbs out there currently ... so its possible one might have a good frame on it.

Matty,

Ditto what Mephious says.

I have subframe here except the inner wall has a largish rust hole in it near the battery box and aln the op of the aprons where it bolts to the fie wall. You're welcome to have a look.

regards

If you're worried about the length of your posts, leave out the spaces between the paragraph's - same info, shorter post ??, well that's my blonde logic - LOL

matty, this may be a long shot, but call this guy... 0401303998.. slim

Not sure what he has these days or what he will charge.

Its going to be long road ahead buddy, id pull off the subframe and check the firewall, chances are the cancer has already spred. If its just small sections, cut out bad metal and weld plates over rusted sections. A good repair is probally just as good as an unknow second hand part. Also before reattaching, paint and rust treat the sections that attach on the firewall, so its not bare metal with in the joint section.

Also being a precaution man, id rip out the front screen and remove the vent plates and check that to.
