Panel Van Lower Tailgate Rubber

Post by reddo »

Hi
After making 10 attempts at getting an old rubber company :whistlinggg: located in the Western Sydney district to supply me with a Lower tailgate rubber for an EH/EJ Panel Van or Ute . I have finally got them to send me a rubber that I paid for last October at a swapmeet here in Newcastle... 6 months ago .... 6 phone calls to ask where it was??.. another 4 emails before they sent me anything!!!

Ya can imagine how excited I was when the item finally arrived....
Only to find that they had sent me a rubber for an EH wagon.. which is different to a panno tailgate.. same width but shorter in height.
Even when it did arrive it had been purchased from Rare spares and forwarded on to me.
The same rubber I could have got if I needed it from Newcastle rare spares 6 effing months ago.

I had a search on rares website and you guys with the FB and EK pannos are in the same boat as me... Rares don't list/stock em??
WTF ????
Every other rubber .,.. but not the lower tailgate?
How do people get on when they shell out over $1000 for an EJ /EH Van or ute rubber kit and it arrives with no lower tailgate rubber.???..
Ya not gunna tell me that if ya spend a grand they give you the extra rubber!!!...ha.. ha.. ha.

Ok then.... so there is plenty of us out there restoring old vans and utes... Can anyone steer me onto someone who can supply the Lower tailgate rubber for an EH VAN.or UTE... Not a wagon :ughh:

Reddo I'm pretty sure utes don't have a lower tailgate rubber. The spare wheel door one does.

Hi Bootlegger.
One would imagine that the panelvan would have to have one.. otherwise the occupants would have got fumigated !!!
My panno has one on it. It has the usual holes every 150mm apart similar to the top tailgate.
The rubber on the EH looks more like chunks of charcoal all hanging on the wire that threadles through itand sticks out in points to push into the holes in the gate.
Similar cross section to the door rubbers.
I am being to thing I will need to visit Clarke rubber and buy a few metres of a similar shape/section and make my own. Glue it in place .. or attempt to put a nick in the rubber in line with the holes and fit those little plastic "Christmas Trees"

Bugger.

Try OVESCO at 19 Ferry Rd Sandgate they don't have a lot of rubbers but if you take your van you may find something or they will give you a sample to take home at least they did for me it's a great shop to visit anyway they have some good stuff.

Hi 73 Coupe.
Thanks for the tip.
I googled.. " Better auto Rubber" and then checked "Contact US"
Interesting to note that Better Auto Rubber address is the same address as "Old Auto Rubber Company" at 6 Cassola st, Penrith

So... I scrolled through B.A.Rs list of EH rubbers... no lower tailgate seal for a panelvan !
Also found it interesting to see all of the old rubber co prices are around $5.00 ea dearer that Better rubber co... :evilll:
Same company trading under 2 different names..or O.A.R.C acting as a distributor.... 2 different price ranges..

If that is the case ... O.A.R.C management/office staff are doing damage to the reputation of B.R.C
I have sent 3 emails to O.A.R.C in the past few days asking them to refund my bucks but they aren't replying..
I will try better rubber cos number later today ... make a few enquires about the connection with the old rubber co and see if they can sort O.A.R.C out..:dohh:

Hi All

I cc'd the management at Better Auto Rubber in on my last email to The Old Auto Rubber Co the other day.
I received phone call replys within 24 hours from the managers at both stores.... O>A>R is a distributor for B.R,C.

The manager of B.A.R head office in QLD has explained the situation between the two companys. He has promised me he will send me a PV lower tailgate rubber ASAP.
Apparently they have had issues making the PV and Ute rubbers due to the silly little retainer clip that holds the rubber at the top corner of the gate either side.
Something to do with the profile of the rubber. It needs to flatten out and bend to a right angle.
Hmmmmmm.. they manage to do it on a wagon tailgate without any issues.

Will let ya know when it arrives and how it fits.
Without going into any details about why.( have been asked not to discuss issues between the 2 companies with anyone).. If you see the O.A.R co at a swap and they haven't got the rubber you want there with them on the day... don't part with your money or order one from them.. Sure ... buy the rubber if they have it there on the day... just don't let go of your money otherwise.

Dont know if this is a dumb idea, but have you thought of looking at early chev rubbers? Dont know if that helps but there are lots of different profiles on ebay?
