Triple SU carbs on FB EK

Post by fbtim »

Was wondering if anyone has photos of triple SU carbs on a grey in an FB EK. I have read topics on here that say it requires firewall cutting or massaging. Also wondering if they're worth the trouble.

The smaller 1 1/4" HS2 Su's will fit but you may have issues with a slight rub on the firewall and you'd have to run sock air filters unless you could find a smaller diameter type. The larger 1 3/4" SU's with the 4 bolt mounting wont fit and you have to box out the firewall. If you can find a manifold that has the runners cast on a slight forward angle, that may help. They are a bit hard to find though. Also have you thought about the battery? It'll have to be relocated to allow the front carby to fit.

SU's or Stromberg CD carbs are in my mind the best carby you can use. Minimal parts, easy to tune, they don't need a lot of maintenance nor do they fall out of tune despite all the rubbish you hear out there. Set up correctly they are a very good carby. Big benefit is the fact that they are very good at mixture control and of course with matching CFM air flow requirements of the engines RPM range.
You can also experiment with dampening of the dashpot and needle tapers to increase throttle response.

Hi Craig,

From all of read they are a good thing. I wanted to do something a bit different on my sedan ( same as your car ). I wanted an old school carby set up.

Cheers, Tim

I like this kind of set up - the tilt gives a bit more room.

This setup is also tilted, but appears to have less angle:

Need to be careful to buy SU main bodies with the correct fuel bowl lug orientation though so that the bowls hang square.

Thanks Harv,

You must be the "grey whisperer"! I used your stromberg PDF to great success and saved about a grand. My mechanic only had to set the float and balance the twins I rebuilt word for word from it.
I'll have a read. I have a Klienig twin intake for my next project but I have found a MK3 Zephyr intake with triple SUs on it and thought that triples on it would be great.

Cheers Tim.

Sorry it's a bit late, I've got a few triple side draught manifolds aswell as currently running the down draught strombergs, was going to run the side draughts on my wagon but time didn't permit to set them up and tune them, you can fit 1 1/2 inch side draught on without touching the firewall depending on your manifold and I was going to make up some offset air cleaners to suit
