steering column help

Post by (AUST)Mod »

Hi all.
Just a quick question that popped into my mind as i was trawling the forums instead of studying :) My car runs a 186 and powerglide, with a center console out of a gemini with a horrible looking shifter on it. I was wondering if i could go back to column shift while keeping the powerglide by using a HR steering column equipped for a powerglide. The reason for this is I am looking to buy some new carpet, and I thought it would be good if I could loose the center console as i hate it (spoils the bench seat feel) before getting the new carpet. If this mod is possible, is it labor intensive or is it a backyard kind of job? Another reason for me wanting to do this mod is it will allow 3 mates to sit in the front without me having to stroke one of their upper thighs in an attempt to change gears :P If this is a hard job, i would also be interested in fitting a better looking shifter like a Hurst branded one or a B&M shifter. Can anyone shed any light on whether these can be used in my setup? thanks
Andrew

It can be done , the main drama is that the shift lever will be on the left side of the gearbox which will mean a bit of mucking around.
If you can get all the bits out of a powerglide equipped HR including column it shouldnt take too much to do, but a bit of fabrication will no doubt be required.
I started with nothing and still have most of it left.

HI
my ek was 3 on the tree manual and i put a HR power
Glide in it with the hr steering column
the job was fairly easy just had to file out the existing hole's
in the chassy rail a couple of mill for it to line up and thats
about it for the column it would be just the linkage's for
gear selection that you may need to change but over all yes
not hard

or you could fit an early right side selector trimatic 3 speed auto with an auto colum out of anything from EK to HR and make/modify the linkage to suit(not hard) see post hr traumatic
