GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR ..........

Post by Blacky »

My ute keeps puking all its coolant out of the overflow tube , just replaced the cap with a new 7lb cap, what are you guys running ? Stockish grey motor , stock radiator.
I started with nothing and still have most of it left.

No good, are you using a recovery cap? If you don't have an overflow bottle it may be the wrong type cap?
lucky the nationals are held in winter time :P

Yep, 7psi cap, non-recovery.

If I fill mine right up to the top of the neck, it will puke until it gets to about midway between the top of the neck and exposing the core (maybe 1.5" down from the neck). It then runs merrily at that level without any more puking.

Cheers,

Mine spits it out until it's well below the top tank . Took litre and a half to get it an inch below the top of the tank yesterday

Hi Blacky, has your head been ported?
Mine did the same, dribbled coolant out when ti got hot. I was worried that the head was cracked or the head gasket had gone. Mine has the heavy duty radiator as well so I was a bit stumped. My engine is mild cam wise but the head has been extensively worked and ported. I' now of the thinking that a lot of extra heat gets to the cooling system as the port walls are now a lot thinner around the exhaust port. I settled with the standard 7 1/2 PSI cap but I run the level lower. When the thermostat opens its close to exposing the core but once it warms right up the level gets up to where it should be. If I get fussy down the track I might fit a recovery bottle so I can get the level right up all the time.

has it only just started doing it? I'm going to suggest head gasket but I'm sure you are smart enough to have checked that
with red motors I've allways had them spit water out (not as much as you are saying but enough that it needs to be topped up regularly) so I just fit a recovery bottle
sometimes yor just better off shitting in yor hands and clapping

Its always done it , but now we are driving long distance in it I figured I would sort it out . Had a 4lb cap on it, hoped the 7 would stop it but might now go to a 13 and see how it goes - don't want to fit a recovery system but might have to .....

Don't go the 13lb cap if your running a standard heater core. If your head gasket or head is leaking combustion into the cooling system you could split the standard heater core if the pressure gets up there.

My impala blows water out also. After 25 years I cant stop it. It only does it when its turned off. Whikst its driving it doesnt get hot or blow out.
I tried a recovery system which didnt do anything.
I tried a higher pressure cap and the top tank swelled up.
The car is due for a rebuild. Hopefully an engine freshen up will fix it.

Does the system hold pressure for at least 10 min after turning the engine off...?
Check the neck/face of the cap seat in the radiator - any pits or dents? You should be able to see a full circle around it where the cap seal sits on.

Only guessing...

Recovery system is the best solution - Igor put me onto a polished stainless tube with highly polished alloy screw cap - tags welded to the side of the tube allow bolting to the driver's side radiator mount bolts.
Custom made by a company in Adelaide.
Pix if wanted..

Mine hasn't lost any since fitting this - and it looks much better than a plastic bottle.

Blacky, mine was doing the same thing. I'd top it up, go for a drive then find it's spewed out over 1 litre from the overflow hose.

It ended up being a faulty cap. I've now gone to a 4lb cap with no dramas.

Not too sure how much the wheel alignment will help Blacky, but I guess it's a process of elimination. :wink34:
