got told the other day that ht rear brakes ( backing plate and shoes) will go on to lc lj torana diff giving you bigger brakes to the rear
is this true
it would be a good upgrade to the rear if so
any one done ? this can it be done ? is it worth doing ?

Re: ht rear brakes onto lc lj diff
I have tried to do ht to hr rear end and the only thing that stopped me was the wheel cylinders hit the axels
I can't see the Torana rear end being any different.

Re: ht rear brakes onto lc lj diff
if you have the parts give it a go cause i'm 99% I did a HR diff with HQ backing plates and brakes and I'm pretty sure they are the same as H/KTG, but trev has said he has also done it and failed so that puts some doubt in my mind but can't think what else I would have used (HR diff HQ bolt pattern)

Re: ht rear brakes onto lc lj diff
when I brought the lc diff from my local wrecker he asked if I wanted the ht brake set up for it
so it would have bigger brakes he reckons they bolt straight up I never heard any one doing or attempting it so I said no not yet plus
I think ive got some ht backing plates but that's it may have to borrow some off him and see
will let you guy's know how I go .

the Austin has an LC/LJ diff with UC brakes on it so i'de assume LH/LX will go but they are still 13" wheel brakes

Re: ht rear brakes onto lc lj diff
Thanks Mick lh lx came out with the 253 so was just trying to beef up the rear brakes
l 34 torana slr had the bigger rear drums 254mm and are the same size as htkg 254mm
so in theory lh lx diif would fit the htkg backing plates brakes drums
but if they fit the lh lx diff they should fit the lc lj diff
does that make sense

Re: ht rear brakes onto lc lj diff
The way to do this conversion is to use HQ backing plate with HG drums. The HQ backing plates need to have the center hole enlarged to suit the early model wheel bearing. This Job should be with on a lathe rather than an oxy.

this maybe what you did Mick with the hq set up on the Hurried Replacement diff

Re: ht rear brakes onto lc lj diff
Ok so borrowed a ht rear backing plate and brake set up of a mate and bolted it up to the lc lj diff
all lined up didn't have to make hole bigger as it fit over the bearing
the axel doesn't hit the wheel cylinder but it is very close I would say 3 to 5mm clearance
I will get a hq backing plate and do the same and see if it makes a difference in clearance
