Re: cam info wanted
G'day Adam,
A timely question (nyuck nyuck nyuck )... I've been playing around with cams of late.
A cam will help, but is always a trade-off. It depends on your tolerance for idle lumps, harder starting, lower vacuum (... FB wipers...) and shifting of the power band (normally to higher revs). There are a lot of manufacturers who can regrind your cam, including Wade, Camtech, Clive Cams, Tighe and Waggot (all are on the internet with the exception of Clive - Yellow Pages only), mostly on an exchange basis.
Maybe start with Camtechs list - it starts at mild, and ends up at wild and gives a fair idea of the range available:
http://www.camtechcams.com.au/hold_6cyl ... _grey.html
Headwork will help, but bring your wallet with you. Whilst the cam will cost $150-250 + gaskets + installation time, a decent head overhaul with bigger valves, reshaped chambers, porting, heavy springs etc is going to top a grand.
Could be worse... try finding a blower cam for a grey motor
Cheers,
Harv

Seriously though while it is cheaper to fit a red to improve performance of your early Holden I'm glad you are keeping the grey, cam wise mate it takes in a few factors, fuel supply (in your case twin strommies), I assume extractors, modified ignition and head work.
Firstly I would suggest that you ensure the carbies are well sorted (jet sizes / venturi restrictors fitted) and a set of extractors to help your grey breathe. Then as Harv has suggested contact the cam grinders and tell them what you want to achieve before spending dollars on the head, I think you have accepted that while a warm/hot grey motor won't set any records I can tell you that they are a heap of fun if you enjoy doing your own spanner work.
Remember Adam, its all in the planning to get the best outcome when modding any engine

Re: cam info wanted
i get the impression he is more wanting to fit the cam just for the lumpy idle, if so yes you can without head modifications but if you want the cam for performance as has been said to get maximum benefit you will need head work
sometimes yor just better off shitting in yor hands and clapping

Re: cam info wanted
I 'm thinking of doing something similar Adam.
I'm looking at a bit more mid range torque and a sweet lumpy idle.
One of the places that I have found was Camtech cams.

Same with me I'm taking mine to Clive Cams this weekend, they also have all the Wade profiles aswell. Clive knows greys and when I mentioed the profile number he knew off it off the top of his head.

Re: cam info wanted
I have a business card sitting here on my desk for Clive Cams, recommended to me by a mate for a cam for my flathead. Seems to be the go to man for older style engines.
Speed and Style........... One day I'll get the speed bit.
Re: cam info wanted
I have been told that Waggott still do them as well, they are in Alstonville in northern NSW.
I started with nothing and still have most of it left.

Dropped off my Cam at Clives today. He still knows the grinds for the Grey Motor off by heart. Friendly guy.

Re: cam info wanted
How did you go with your cam grind GreyEJ ?
I'm now taking mine to Clive Cams,
after my local tune shop recommended that he would do a better profile for what I want.
Cheers Rob

Re: cam info wanted
Clive did mine, that can is for a different engine I'm building I think it was 32/72.
The one in the car I'm not sure what grind it is as its from a speedway midget but it gets real jerky around the street.

Re: cam info wanted
Also when I went to see Clive I was going to get something milder but he convinced me to get this on ( didnt take much )
Re: cam info wanted
A lot of people here probably don't know this, but Clive did the Holden six cams for HDT - Ian Tate did the engines, including the last one Brocky raced, just before the WA smash.. that being the FX at Goodward, England - there's a huge blue going on between most people who had something to do with that FX - money is owed left right and centre.. Phil Munday has the car.
I video'd it running in an unadvertised display day he had in Kilsyth some years back - by golly, that engine had a vibe to it...love to post up the vid - but don't know how... sweetest/horniest grey I have ever heard.
Clive did the cam for my red motor - totally stock with the EH grind, not the HR.
Indeed, he is a great bloke - and certainly will walk you through every part of the grind. I bought new hydraulic lifters and pushrods from him - at a marvelous price.
The bloke who did my head put me onto Clive - they work together a bit.
The bloke who did the head was Ray Layton (Ray Layton Cylinder Heads) - in Fern Tree Gully, just off Burwood Highway - Burwin Volkswagen use him.
He's a whizz with heads... old school, bit like Jack McNamara for diffs - inside the workshop is just a maze of aisles like Sydney streets - with "stuff" each side of it.
He's a bit of a HO tragic - has an amazing GT.... tells me he "takes it out to warm up the tyres every now and then"... bit of a larrakin on occasion - local cops know the car, apparently.....
When I did the top end refurb - both Clive and Ray talked me out of doing anything in the way of modifying it... but, if I had wanted to - they were armed with what was needed to balance both the head and cam...
As is posted above - work out the result you want then let those blokes tell you what you need to marry all the package together.
In my case, it was simply better to keep it stock - the motor is unstressed and runs very economically, has smooth idle but can pull the car very well with the 4 speed box - 3:08 diff just requires using the gears more - but highway speed and economy are brilliant....
Bottom line - you don't know how much I pine for that original old grey missing from this dear old bus...
frats,
Rosco

Re: cam info wanted
Great story Rosco,I had no idea of Clives history with HDT.
Clive seems to know his stuff, after talking to the old fella doing my motor about the specs on my car and what I wanted, Clive said he had the perfect grind for what I want.
I'm not sure what grind it will be on my cam GreyEJ, but he did specifically mention that it had to run in a manual.
So I can't wait to see what it idles, and drives like
Cheers Rob
