Hot grey head, in Sydney?

Post by Harv »

I'm slowly putting the pieces together to strap one of the Normans into the FB. Coincidently, the head in the old girl could do with a tidy up. Am planning to pull out the spare head, strip it and then get it done.

I'm hunting for a cylinder head shop (prefer Sydney but can courier if needs be) that can clean and crack test, then machine up a grey head for bigger valves, fit some hardened inserts and undertake a decent port job without striking water. No need for shaving to the thumbprints... the huffer will provide plenty enough compression  . Not planning on double valve springs as this thing is unlikely to be screaming fast enough to get valve float.

I could take it to one of the generic cylinder head mobs, but would much rather somewhere that has worked on greys previously.

Anyone had personal positive experience and can reccomend a shop?

Cheers,
Harv

Try these guys Andrew.
They build all those drag race engines and they also rebuild grays from scratch.
They also build their own replacement parts as well.
Could be worth looking into.

Harv,
I know Melbourne's not much help but I would recommend Eddie Woods at Head Stud Developments in Moorabbin.
He was the man behind Yella Terra (Perfectune). Google Gasoline and he has done a few sessions for the TV show. One he did went into working older heads and he covered doing the Grey Motor head. Of note I'm pretty sure he did the head for the "Goodwood Holden" which was the FX that Peter Brock drove prior to his death. Apparently Brocky said the car was nearly as quick as the XU1 he raced.
I'm getting my head done by him and will be picking it up tomorrow. I'm the same with not running double valve springs but I think you made need to rethink using them on yours. Positive pressure from the blower acting on the inlet valves will induce valve float earlier than what would be expected with standard springs.

Thanks guys - appreciated.

I guess the exhaust side shouldn't float with the blower. The cylinder should always be at higher pressure than the exhaust manifold. The inlet side could be another matter though as the pressure differential accross the inlet valves will increase substantively... might need the springs on the inlet side. Wonder if there is any harm in running doubel springs on inlet side only?

You could try col sutton at peak rebores in peakhurst. He is an old time boat racer and did all the machine work on my hilborne injected 144 falcon. He is pretty switched on. Give him a call.
