As per the title, did they ever treat these old girls with anything underneath when new? The reason I ask is that the wagon I am doing has a perfect floor. No rust. I got under it last night to start cleaning and its covered in what looks like a thick coat of tar. Where the oil has soaked in it comes off in sheets like matting. Quite thick. The floor under it is perfect.no surface rust.nothing. Just factory paint it looks like.
What ever is coated under it has saved it for sure. Its also on the inner sills e.t.c and they too are in perfect condition. Solid as a rock.
Hell, I'm not complaining at all but, I am curious if it was done new or very soon after being bought by the owner.
Not all chemicals are bad. Without chemicals such as hydrogen and
oxygen, for example, there would be no way to make water, a vital
ingredient in beer
i'm not one of the more knowledgable as far as what came from the factory BUT i've had my head under more than a few i would say it may have been an option or service offered as i've seen plenty with nothing and no signs of there ever being anything and also quite a few with kinda as you've described a very thick coating also seen them with what i would nearly call what looks and feels like a plasticy type coating and seen the same on more than 1
sometimes yor just better off shitting in yor hands and clapping
I think they were all raw steel from factory, though I'm guessing the dealers back then probably do like today's dealers and offered some sort of rust proofing, where they charged you a mint for basically a few cans of spray paint or fish oil.
We used to have a HQ about 30 years back which had all the insides of panels sprayed in some sort of galvanized paint. It must be the only HQ i know of that had zero rust
My EK sedan was rustproofed with what looks like a thin paint coating. I expect it would have been done by the dealer as there is over-spray on the dizzy and starter motor etc. I don't think this would have been done at the factory given the fairly 'sloppy' application.
Has worked a treat though, 0 rust anywhere, but the car has been babied all of its life.

My ute has a sort of rock hard black coating I think its a tar based sealant all the bolts it covered were a nuisance to get out but it has allowed many bolts to be reused with the threads being rust free and shiny! found some rust fibreglassed over but my frame and floor is pretty good from the gunk on it, taking the panels off the inside of the ute tub revealed previous fish oil treatment and more sealant a few oldies in my car club reckoned the tar sealant was commonly undertaken by dealers to protect stock from rust when sitting for prolonged periods in the car yard, same service was apparently offered at point of sale as one of those protect your purchase type of deal at least in this area anyway (southern nsw)
