I was just checking out the photo posted above again ...

The following are all painted BLACK :
fan blade, harmonic balancer and breather pipe?

Does anyone know if these were the stock original colours for these particular parts (I had always 'assumed' that 'all' the engine parts were GREY?).

jamie.
the folowing should be black:

fan
fan pully

bosch blue: (ofcourse, if electronic system is bosch)

dizzy body
starter motor
generator
regulator box
coil
OR
the above items can be painted black as this was an option

if the motor has a lucas systmem, i believe coil was cad plated, and the rest was black?? i am not quite sure on the lucas system as i am a bosch person :)

evrerything else should be grey:

motor, harmonic balancer, head, rocker cover (unless its alloy, ofcourse) inlet/outlet manifolds and everythign else i have not mentioned.

i hope that helps (and i hope i have written it out correctly)

Just to confuse the confused further I thought that -

FE - EK Lucas coil optional - aluminium with a black Bakelite top
FB - EK Bosch tin can coil - blue with red Bakelite top
Lucas regulators had an aluminium cover
Bosch regulators had a black cover
Distributor, starter motor - Bosch blue or Delco Remy black
Generator, oil filler, breather, harmonic balancer - black semi gloss
Gearbox unpainted
Engine, fan, sump - Grey
BUT I will stand corrected

I used the VHT engin spray can - did not like all grey, added GMH blue to break it up.

Me Again.
Regarding the colour of the fan, pulley, and breather pipe, both my engine and the spare one I got from another club member sports these colours on these parts. As far as I could tell they had always been that colour. Upon removal of the black paint only metal lay beneath. As for the balancer, it came to me black,-look closely-, It's an 'after-market' harmonic balancer. My old one and the one on the spare motor were both completely shagged. I thought it wrong to paint this grey - almost sacriledge. One thing I'm impressed with is the amount of discussion which has been fostered by a question on the 'correct' colour for a grey motor. Hope to catch up with some of you guys at the AHD on OZ day weekend. Come for the cars, stay for the motor!
