Teach me about mufflers

Post by parisian62 »

I've had a 2" exhaust put through the EK and a new muffler. Pics here http://www.fbekholden.com/forum/viewtop ... &start=735

The thing is...and you guys will think I'm crazy...it's way to loud. :o I'm talking deafening loud...not the sort or noise I could put up with driving with the family.

I think it's a full flow through muffler?

I need to tone it down and get that nice burble from a warm grey....you know the sound...

I'm planning on going back to the muffler shop but what should I be asking for...a standard muffler...a sports muffler...?

Stewart, it does sound loud when you start it up under the carport or in the garage. Wait until you drive it on the road though to see if it's too loud.

I could be wrong, but that doesn't look straight through. Usually the inlet or outlet pipe on the muffler are not offset if it's straight through.

if you still think it's too loud, check out what set up Lou has on his wagon. His gets louder as the revs go up, but is not too loud when idling.

Hi Pete

I did the sensible thing and rang Chris at the muffler shop. He said a straight through has been fitted.

Good point about the garage/car port but I still think it will be too loud...

Looks like I'm going back to get a tri-flow? one put in which is a standard muffler?

yeah generally a straight through muffler is just that pipe goes in the midle in and out, but there should be alot more options than going to a standard type muffler even where the muffler is place in the exhaust can make a difference front/rear, strange that you think it to be lowd they usually don't need much of a muffler to keep them quiet maybe if there is room a secondary muffler/resinator might do the trick there's also as has been said being run under the carport/garage also the fact you have no interior
also something i just learnt on commodores, i needed an exhaust for a wagon it was dearer than a sedan when i questioned this as they are the same floor outlay they said the wagon has to have the second muffler as being a wagon you get more noise inside the car, i found this strange till i just bought a commodoer ute that has a sports exhaust that you cannot here unless you have the window down and then you can only just hear it where i've had wagons with sports exhausts and they are very lowd inside the car
sometimes yor just better off shitting in yor hands and clapping

Stewarts is quite loud, Mick. Though mine sounds loud under a carport, and thats only a stock dunger

You would want a bit of noise, so I wouldn't go standard muffler. I'd also wait and see how loud it is inside the car once the interior is in

Yup, as others have said there's more than two types. A good sports muffler should do the trick provided it has offset outlets as its guaranteed not a straight through. Or add a hotdog/ resonator out back.
