Good news. now you can try it on some of those hills. Like was mentioned before, don't wait for the light as it comes on too late, and it's not a water level indicator, more like an
I'm DANGEROUSLY HOT indicator (In my experience anyway!) Just check the water and look for the cap releasing water when the engine is running as this shouldn't happen. ( there may be a little dribble when you shut it off but I think this isn't too bad.

P.S. I've just read my last 2 posts and they seem like JIBBERISH!

The old girl is back. Got to see the core of the radiator and it was really rooted. The housing for the thermostat had to be replaced because of pitting around the seal, so now she's running nice and smooth again after a tune up.

Thanks for all the advice!

I just want to add that PWR does a core that can be built into the stock frame/tanks. This new core has more and bigger tubes and when painted (it's not alloy) looks fairly original. The fin design is "triangular" not "horizontal" and allows better air flow. It's fairly expensive but works very well!

When I replaced my water pump recently I discovered the thermostat was rusted in two and just sitting there in two pieces (obviously not doing it's job)....now this car has been running at good temp for years. Bought a new thermostat and popped it in and ran it stationary for a while, got way hotter than normal.....I've been running without it for a while now seems fine.

I do run a 5 speed though so freeway speeds seem ok.......

Does the engine get pretty hot before the thermostat flows?
Installing a temp gauge once I get some $$ sorted.

She'll get warm before the thermostat opens. Correct Tridon ones are below:

Part number Type Opening temperature
TT1-160 Conventional 71ºC (160ºF)
TT2000-160 High flow 71ºC (160ºF)
TT1-167 Conventional 75ºC (167ºF)
TT1-170 Conventional 77ºC (171ºF)
TT2000-170 High flow 77ºC (171ºF)

71ºC for cars with no heaer, 77ºC for cars with a heater.

That's the next step.
