Diff or wheel bearings?

Post by John »

Took the ek around the block this morning and she has a bit of a whine. Probably the diff but is there an easy way to rule out wheel bearings?
Not all chemicals are bad. Without chemicals such as hydrogen and
oxygen, for example, there would be no way to make water, a vital
ingredient in beer

Easy fix - tell her she can drive it next time (fairs fair) Only kidding.

Pop each wheel up on a stand, feel for slop by rocking the wheel with your hands either side. Spin em around by hand and listen for any mild gravelly noise.

If it's not diff or wheel bearings, that whine may well be Johny Cash in the boot

Wheel bearing noise will come and go in cornering and diff noise will be more noticable holding a higherr constant speed ,the sound pitch will become higher with speed also ,a lot more than a wheel bearing
If it leaks diff oil it may jusr be low .
And if you work out it is the diff centre you can use a thicker gear oil to quieten it down.
