Yo..
I have a 186 that makes a hell of a clatter in or around "No:2"on cold start up.
Noise drops off significantly after about 2 or 3 seconds to a point where you can barely hear the "Tick"
Have been through and adjusted all the rockers and replaced 2 slightly bent pushrods.... but i think i have a "lazy"cam follower /lifter that wont pump up .
So..
Was planning on dropping the side cover off and trying to remove the lifter i think that is giving me trouble.
Its been a long time since i fiddled with lifters and from memory they dont like coming up out of the block due to possible slight mushrooming on the surface that rides on the cam... ( the bottom of the hyd lifter.)
They come out ok if ya pull the motor down and remove the cam and drop the lifter down ... but i dont want to go to those extremes.
Has anyone had this issue before??
How do ya get the lifter out??
What else causes a noise like that on just the one cylinder at cold start up???
Might try using some of that oil additive that is suppose to clean out oil journals/passageways. ??? could be some sort of crap stopping the oil getting in there and pumping up the lifter??
Cheers fa now

there is a tool you can get but if the lifter is bad i don't think it will work, my method is get a small sharp flat screw driver get it in the groove where the circlip is and pull up hoping for the best
sometimes yor just better off shitting in yor hands and clapping

Re: removing red motor hyd lifters ( cam followers)
give it a go
take the side cover off and rocker gear etc, then wind the motor over by hand and the lifter will come up till u can see a grove ,then pry it up with screw driver, u can also get them telescopic pen magnets slide down the gallery.
If that doesn't work well u might as well till u have a new cam etc and go the whole hog.
In saying that I have never struck one that with a bit off patience and a whole lot of &*#@ words that didnt come out

Re: removing red motor hyd lifters ( cam followers)
Reddo what have you bought.
I had a 253 with mushroomed lifters. I pulled the cam out and made a tool up out of pvc water pipe. I blocked one end and notched the side out. Then i put a piece of inner tube over the slot. Slide the water pipe up the cam tunnel and pushed the lifter down into the pipe. The rubber gave enough to allow the lifter to go deep enough that it could tilt forward into the pipe. Then you slide the pipe out.
I know you dont want to pull tye cam bt at least the lifters wont fall into the sump.
