Fuel filter
I've seen fuel filters placed before and after the fuel pump...what's the best place or no difference?

Re: Fuel filter
Stewart, mine is after the pump, just before the carby.
Dr Terry did tell me why he put it there instead of before the pump, though I forgot what he told me

Re: Fuel filter
Before the pump protects the pump as well as the carb. More critical with centrifugal or positive displacement pumps (eg most electrics) than diaphragm pumps (e.g. grey motor pumps have bigger clearances and can tolerate some crap). Can be a pain in the bum to change if put in the wrong place (... on a bad day, have to drain the tank). Can cause a centrifugal pump to cavitate (low pressure, vapourise fuel, bubbles in pump or pump runs dry, chew out internals) if filter blocks and is not changed.
After the pump protects only the carb. Easier to change (the pump acts as an obstruction and prevent fuels pissing out too badly when the filter is removed) and often easier to locate (engine bay, not under car).
Cheers,
Harv.

Re: Fuel filter
I agree with DR - before the pump when you can.
Then again, after changing out a pre-pump filter in the dark on the forecourt of the Cessnock Shell servo (and getting a pretty good Harv degrease in the process
), an engine bay mounted filter sure looks good.
Cheers,
Harv.

Re:
Before the pump as well, I don't jack it up though I just stick a centre punch into the rubber fuel line when I take the filter offDevilrod wrote:I prefer before pump as it keeps them from clogging up. To save fuel going every where when changing it I jack the front up so it's definitely higher than the outlet in the tank, seems to work well enough.

Re: Fuel filter
If its a regular holden six pump with a glass bowl there is not much point putting it before the pump,at least in my opinion.
The fuel is filtered by the wire gauze before it can carry lumpy bits that may cause damage.

Re: Fuel filter
Before the pump. If you're worried about the fuel line leaking when you change it, put a cock in it
A cock is a good anti-theft device too

A pet-cock that is.
Crap, that sounds worse
Put an inline 'petrol shut-off valve' upstream of the filter
