EJ with 202

Post by EKjimmy »

I've just recently bought an EJ for my girlfriend, it's got a HR disc front, 202 and 4 speed.
The car was last rego'd in vic in 97, though i don't have any of the old papers, just a CTP slip.
There is a number etched/engraved on the LH side of the subframe/engine bay and the guy i bought it off seemed to think it may be an engineers approval number. I just wanted to find out if anyone has found anything like this on their cars?
If i can get it rego'd based on it being previously registered in VIC with the same engine (if they can find the records i suppose) i'll do that.
If not, i'd probably flog off the 202 and HR front and put in an EH front and 149 (according to the light vehicle mod rules on the RTA's website it's legal without engineering as it's less than 10% capacity increase)
Or failing that i'll just go back to a grey and source a front end, throttle linkages, gearbox, tailshaft, exhaust plus a few other bits.
Any thoughts?

Don't know much about the licencing issues over east, but for my 2c worth, I'd drop in a nice fresh 149 with a mild cam and leave the front end how it is

Yeah i think that wouldn't be a bad idea either. Stays within the capacity increase limits, with the added safety of discs. Also saves the screw around finding front ends etc.

my thoughts are start looking for a 149/EH front if you want no hassles or the grey motor option, they're hard enough to rego with mods if previously regoed in NSW let alone another state
i say EH front as stoopid NSW laws you actually legaly need an engineers report for the disc brake front, some guys will let it slide but if anything were to happen and the insurance Co find out they can wipe you as an illegal modification

I'd be more inclined to leave the red and other bits right where they are and get it up to spec rather than spend a heap of time and money reverse engineering it , it would probably take the same amount of effort to make it compliant and you will end up with a car that stops , steers and goes better than a grey/drum/king pin/3 speed setup.
I started with nothing and still have most of it left.

All good arguments,
I think i'll try to get away with the disc front end and a 149 though unless i can find an EH front end.
Just can't really afford the engineers certification on top of CTP and rego - correct me if i'm wrong but the engineers cert. seems to be upwards of $600?

Best to ask an engineer - the money you spend on anothe rengine , front end , etc could well pay his fees and for the other bits you might need to get it compliant.

as blacky said best to ask an engineer BUT the 2 that are local to me want to do a swerve test and brake test to any car with steering and brake mods which i think the disc brake front comes under at $550 each on top of the cost of report and if it fails either test it's another $550 to redo gotta love new laws :x

saying that 149s are getting hard to find but disc brake fronts are worth good money

We've got a 149 already (although it needs to be rebuilt), and yeah at $550 just to see if it'll pass a test i think i'll try to get around that :?
I suppose i'll check with my mechanic who did the blue slip on the EK to see if he'll pass it as is, otherwise go for EH front end with the 149.j
Haven't seen any EH front ends for sale though. If i sell the HR front and 202 it'll offset the costs of the other gear a bit too

Yep very true mick,
After a bit of digging i've found the VSCCS or whatever it is list, so i can call a few this week.
Is it just me or do those pricks at the rta try and hide all that sort of info from us in a lame effort to stop people modifying cars?
I guess it'd keep some of the dimwit jap car owners in the dark

This EJ was legally registered by an Australian citizen to be driven on Australian roads in any state they chose to drive it.
Why cant it just be re-registered, its already been engineered ?????????
You are an Australian citizen wanting to drive it on Australian roads, whats the differance?

Good point thommo, if it was rego'd in NSW it'd probably be okay but being VIC i dunno.
I might ask my mechanic first to see if he'd pass it as is before i go through too much b/s

you know how beauracratic bullshit goes thommo state govts not talking to each other etc   it's a joke especially when the rules from state to state are basically the same, same with the disc brake thing it's basically bolt in job to have balljoints and disc brakes rather than king pins and drum brakes yet you need to shell out money for some one to say it's ok, the only time i ever engineered just a front end the engineer couldn't believe i was asked for a report and never even looked at the car the report was done over the phone
to many rules made up by guys that would probly struggle to change a tyre  :x
