How do i add driver door lock?

Post by skin_dog »

Firstly, why the hell is there no lock on the driver door of my ute????
Was that considered a security feature in the '60's?
Was is to encourage chivalry by forcing you to open your ladies door first???

Anyway, has anyone drilled one in and can you give me any tips on doing it right? I havn't looked inside yet but i'm assuming the mechanism will accomodate a lock barrell, correct?

Thanks guys and sorry for a post full of questions.

My standard EK sedan also didn't have a door lock on the drivers side.
Apparently mine was a Postie car and they never had a drivers lock......

It is an easy fix.
Just mark out the hole by copying the dimensions from the passenger door. Drill the hole then you need to file the little notches that match the lock barrel.
Just need to trial fit it a few times. Then the lock will fit straight into the handle mechanism.

Anyone have a plausable reason why GMH did this? I have heard a variety of reasons but none really make sense.

If you want it to look original you will have to cut a slot for the lock keeper plate in the back edge of the door inner - if not , use a keeper plate off a HQ/Z , they fit over the lock barrel from the inside.
I started with nothing and still have most of it left.

Thanks for the help guys, one more question: what bit is best to use for drilling? Spade bit? Hole saw? I don't have a standard drill bit large enough.

A chassis punch would be best if you can get your hands on some , otherwise put a holesaw through it and sneak up on the size with a die grinder - the holesaw will burn the paint .

My sedan had no lock on the drivers door so i just fitted central locking ,saves repainting.
