Triples are on !!!!

Post by choppedfan »

Well after much research and rebuilding of carbies, modifying linkages etc I went for a drive with the triples on and can honestly say it was worth the effort :D :D Smaller main jets with venturi restrictors made the world of difference (thanks Harv  ) and thanks to my wifes ever patient uncle John, who has been a great reference and trouble shooter for me when I struck a problem.
He's a great believer of telling me what could be wrong and then told me what to do rather than do it for me (best way to learn) as you can see I found a use for my old McDonald Bros scoop off my tunnel rammed windsor. Just made up another base plate so it lowers it over the carbs, and I think the fins blend in with the rocker cover.

Being in an FJ I don't have any scoop to bonnet clearance issues, going for a run to Narranderra over Easter for a day trip so it will be interesting to see how much difference there is in mpg over the twins that it was running, not that it matters because it runs real well and I think it looks cool

Very, very cool Mick 8) . Love the scoop

Posts like this one make me want to go hunting for a triple manifold, even though the FB is supposed to be bog stock standard (I have a mind like a goldfish - easily distracted... it's a wonder I get anything finished  ).

Cheers,

Fanbl##dytastic Mick 8) The only thing I would say about the scoop is it hides those triples a bit - you gotta show em off! I spy some other bits like a chrome sideplate, chrome coil cover, extractors...What other specs details can you tell us about your grey?

So it drives well around town?

Got any pics of the whole FJ?

G'day Stewart,

I brought the ute from an ex trimmer in Newcastle four years ago, its been chopped two and a half inches twenty years ago (and engineered) it had a high stance when I got it as he used it for his shop truck. I've been through the suspension, kingpins, springs, shocks etc. and of course lowered it, new widened steel 14 inch rims with the front rims reversed for suspension clearance, done the brakes and reworked the engine 30/70 cam, headwork, electronic ignition, new extractors and originally swapped it's stock single stromberg for twins and of course now it's running triples  Drives really well around town (no flat spots) and doesn't appear to "load up" if held up for traffic at intersections. I also changed the diff centre out for a 3.36 because of living where we do in the country ( anything we go to is usually a few hours in the car) and I didn't want the engine working too hard at highway speed. Its really good in the body and the paintwork that was done when it was chopped has held up well, sure its got a couple of chips and the odd mark but it still looks ok by me and of course I do drive my toys

Here's a couple of pics of how it looks at the moment

Great stuff Mick. What size jets did you go with? Is that your FX too? You've got the best of both worlds... 8)

Stewart,

The FX ute isn't mine, it belongs to a local retired guy from the restorers club and its an original two owner (his father in law brought it new) that was only ever used on the farm and around the local area until it was restored a few years back (its immaculate)

Mate I've gone with uncle John's advice on jet size, they are smaller but I'd rather run it for a while before I say what size they are in case someone reads it, does the same and has issues. :(

In other words modifying any engine there can be so many variables, cam spec, timing, head mods etc.so what works in my engine may not work as well with yours depending on what mods you've done to yours. Let me run some miles up and then I'll let you know how the carbs are going, but at the moment I can't stop grinning every time I get behind the wheel

Cheers Mick 8)

I always wonder with bug catchers like that dose the rear carb get enough air or should I say the "same" as the front there for running richer?
Probably not enough to worry about.

I ran it in a hiboy on a tunnel rammed windsor, no bonnet poking up in the breeze  never had a problem although its funny you raised that point Trev we must think alike. Even though its under a bonnet I had a similar thought so I made an intake baffle plate out of a radio blanking plate, not that I think you'd notice any difference with or without it

Its funny how fitting the scoop came about, I have a lot of parts from previous projects shoved under benches and hanging on the walls, you know how it is there's just some things you never will part with. Late one night I was trying different filters on to see which ones to use (note classic case of form over function  ) and I saw the scoop hanging there. I just sat it over the top of the carbs and thought "thats it" made a base plate so it would sit low and still be able to use off the shelf filters

Ive got one of those scoops on my hydroplane. Its running a small block with twin carter afb carbs.
The only issues ive had with the scoop was at spped the fuel would get sucked out of the carb and exit out the front of the scoop all over my face. I turned the scoop to face backwards and it didnt do it again.
Ive never been able to explain it.
