Wet carpet!!

Post by Mattrix »

Hi all. For years I have struggled with the rain making its way into the old ek and settling in the carpet, I have just recently removed the carpet and chucked it out. I have sprayed rust converter on the floor pan and I will buff the floor and prime it whenever I get a chance.( bloody Christmas!) is there a common place where rain makes its way into a 50 yr old car?
Cheers matt.

In my previous EKs I've had the aftermarket window rubbers which leak in the corners. Also, some of the aftermarket winscreens aren't that good a fit which makes it worse. Another one I had was a rusty plenum chamber (could also be the rubber drain tubes have become dislodged or are cracked).

If you have a heater, then it could be that. Hmmm  I guess also around the wiper pivots if the gaskets are perished (not sure about that one though).

In my ute it came up through the rust holes in the floor :D

To be honest, I'm not sure how many FB/EKs would stay dry inside if driven in the rain  Maybe a few that have been very well maintained / restored would do. None of mine have been 100%.

I'd be pretty hesitant to drive mine on a wet day unless I really had to.

I've done some looking and I'm pretty sure it's coming from the plenum drain tubes. Does anyone have drawings or information on these tubes. It looks like to get to the plenum side I have to remove the plenum panel which means removing the front fenders. ( huge job ). I must have replaced the tubes years ago but can't remember.

Any info would be great,
Cheers

Is it leaking from the tubes or the plenum itself? If it's the plenum itself then yep you'd probably need to rip the front end apart and screen out to get the plenum grille off, unless you were lazy and put knead it in there
If it's the tubes just pop em out from under the dash and replace
