Protec basecoat

Any painters out there had problems with protec basecoat.
I recently painted a car and today I taped the chrome windscreen moulds down. When I pulled the tape off the paint peeled off from the primer.
This isn't the first time it has happened. Ive had it happen always when I've tried to do graphics etc. the paint just peels off in sheets. Sometimes it peels between the layers of basecoat.
I had've the protec rep out. They have told me to put hardener in the basecoat. I tried that it it didn't work. I use all there primers,reducers etc. Ive tried low tack tapes. I painted a triumph for a customer a year ago. Some of the paint peeled off when he washed it with the hose.
This seems to be only happening with metallics especially silver. Solids seem to be fine.
If anyone has a solution. I've tried everything. I've been buying of this paint supplier for twenty years. They are local,i have an account with them and they look after me so I don't want to be forced to change brands plus I really want to know what is going wrong and protec don't seem to have an answer apart from its me which is fine if they could tell me what I'm doing wrong.
So I'm putting it out there has it happened to anyone on this forum

What grade sandpapper did you go over the primer with?

600 wet

Maybe you need to try some test panels with 600 dry, 400 wet, 400 dry then maybe coarser? Just a thought!

I'm keen to hear from real painters about this too.

The basecoat should chemically bond with the primer. Enamels key into the scratches left in the primer.
Once I've put the first base colour down all the graphics after that need to key to this.
Like I mentioned before this is only happening with metallics.
I painted a catamaran for a guy silver. A month after it was finished he put a vinyl racing sticker on. After he finished the race he peeled it off. The silver paint came with it in one big sheet
If I paint solid basecoat colours I don't have any problems.

2K or Acrylic?

Basecoat is part of a two pac system. The basecoat colour is sprayed on first. It usually doesn't have a hardener mixed in it. Then you paint the two pac clear over the top.

Is there a maximum flash time allowed between the colour and the clear?
Perhaps you are leaving it too long between coats,or maybe the booth temp is incorrect for the chemical bonding to take place properly?

Just suggestions from a guy who doesnt paint but hangs around with painters,maybe quiz the reps on these ideas.

Dave, are you talking about the Protec 706 Basecoat ? If it is (and to answer Wot's question) that's an acrylic basecoat, which is them covered with a 2 pack clear.

Adding hardener to the base coat will make the paint less prone to chips and stuff like that, but it wont help with adhesion, which is what the problem sound like it is.

Guys,
I have no idea about painting 2 pack but my latest project will be. The spray painter I am getting my info from has told me to paint the colour coat on the primer straight after the the last primer coat is applied. So the prep work has to be done then a primer coat just before the colour goes on. He says it will help against that problem.

So what your painter is saying is to prepare the car and before the colour goes down put one wet coat of primer then lay the colour straight on that.
