Blower??

Post by muza »

Hi all, would love to put an under bonnet blower on a V8 in an fb/ek down the track a bit.
Going by the regs link thats on this site, given an fb/ek only weighs about 1130kgs, the biggest engine I can supercharge is a 202 (207ish I think).
If this is the case, how do people get away with it?
Is it a matter of engineering it with a legal V8 then putting a blower on later or finding an engineer that will allow it, if there is such a thing!
Any help would be appreciated.
Cheers Muza

We had an Engineer inspect my fb sedan and a mates FJ Ute last week ...mine doesnt have a problem with the 327 and 400 th and 9 ' diff... the steering column and front end , wipers , are approved  ..... the FJ according to the Engineer could be fitted with a 350 a blower because of the engineering gone into the chassis and rear spring hangers ..thats the comment he made anyway ....the rear spring hanger has been strengthened and a double chassis setup has been installed the front subframe is all filled in and and strenghtened as well ... its a real piece of work ..I will try to get a photo up today ...if ya wanna come take a look give me a call mate its just around the corner from my place ...I,m sure he wont mind ...Fingers 0409253202

Yeh cheers mate.
Its something i'm looking at doing down the track, maybe a 308 though as a mate has one already built strong enough to take a blower.
I know by law 327 is supposed to be the biggest naturally aspirated motor you can put in an FB/EK in Vic, power to weight, but if the engineer approves I wonder if you can go bigger.
Might have to call an engineer and have a chat.
Next time i'm down your way mate might take you up on the offer to look at the FJ. It's not the one you have is it?
Oh yeh do you still need the inner guard cuts?

hey mate ...if you do some work to the rear spring hangers and do a strong job of the chassis he will consider allowing a 350 to be fitted .....give me a yell and I will give you the engineer we are using ....he is very helpful and a pleasure to deal with....Fingers

How can he ? The power to weight ratio rule doesnt allow it :econfused:

The car isnt a factory full chassis , If he now catagorises it as having a home built chassis it becomes individually constructed..

Can I please have your engineer :D

With ICV's, the car has to comply with the current years ADR laws. Things like engine emissions, seat belts, demisters, stop lights, side impact bracing, etc. It's a big expense, and sort of kills the car a bit, especially when you have to run LPG to pass emissions.

Like Harko said, I thought it was the authorities (RTA or Vic Roads) that determine what size engine can go into what car, not the engineers.

Though lets be honest, the majority of the registered cars that were on show at Motorex probably wouldn't be 100% legit anyway. And by that I'm not talking dodgy engineering, just that they won't pass things like noise tests, tyres too wide, too low, etc....

You are correct VicRoads lay all the requirements for registration out for the engineers to follow and they do determine the maximum size allowed but the FB EK is right on the border of a 350 and they dont like to allow them unless it is very well engineered ....this is my understanding of what my engineer said to me last week ...anyway what goes on after the car is engineered and registered is anyone guess ........Fingers

apparently it's in the interpritation :ewink: i know a guy that just LEGALY got an LJ torana passed in NSW with a big turbo on a 5.7 litre, no ICV and previously the biggest any engineer would pass was 4.2

the engineer is a closely guarded secret so don't ask and it's legit, ring around maybe you'll find him

NUP like i said LEGAL and LEGIT the guy himself was surprised when the engineer said no worries and was still worried when he went to RTA but they didn't take a second look and this was only recently, apparently the RTA stuff is a "guideline" not what you have to do

the VIC stuff is a bit weird being the same engineer looking at both cars as in NSW what you can have is based on a stock standard car
