electronic dizzys in Red motors

Post by reddo »

Yo...
Scored an electronic dizzy from a 202 blue motor.
Bunged in the old panno...
The dizzy has 1 negative ... and 1 positive wire coming out of it...
so... i connect it across the pos and neg terminals on the coil i got with the dizz..
Set the timing and fire the car up. runs sweet.. drives great with noticably more pick up..
All good.
Problem is if i leave the van sit for more than 2 days the battery goes flat :?:
Drop the old points dizzy back in... car can sit for a month .. starts straight up!!
So... what am i doing wrong with the 'lectronic gizzmo ??

Way i see it ... Once the ign is off.. there is nothing along that circuit that should cause a drain on the battery?????

Regards... clueless

If there is no power going to the coil or dissy, when the ignition in off, its highly unlikely the problem for current draw.

Did you change the coil as well. And replace the resister wire from the ignition switch.
There's nothing as Sweet as a EK V8

if the ignition has been changed to negative switching to the coil, so when you put the new dizzy in it creats a new earth path for the battery to discharge

to test, measure the voltage from the chassis to the pos of the coil, if its neg switched you wont see a change when ignition is switched on/off

Hi Guys...
"... "And replace the resister wire from the ignition switch"

The only wire i have from the ign is the original red wire.... no resistor on that wire??
The ign has not been changed to negative switching.
I installed the coil that came with the dist... i put the incoming pos from the ign sw on the coil pos term and the neg side goes to the dist.
The dist also has a pos coming off it , so i put that on the pos side of the coil with the ign pos.

To check for current drain when everything is turned off i usually just disconnect the pos term at the battery. I usually get a small spark when i touch the clamp on the pos post of the battery ... but i put that down to the memory on the cd player.
It gives a small spark even with the original dizzy in place.
But never enough to flatten the battery in a couple of days like it does with the electronic dizy in there.
