I've got twins!
I've got twins!
Saw these on eBay and threw a bid on expecting them to sell for much more and ended up winning them, so now i've got some twin carbs to set up which leads me to a whole butt-load of questions...
I really don't even know where to begin with my queries so i think for now i'll just post these pics and see what you guys think, that might save me asking some silly things.
However i will ask this, what should i have paid for this setup? I thought i got it at a good price but what do i know.

Re: I've got twins!
congrats on the twins. those air cleaners are
As long as you're happy doesn't matter what you paid for them but I'll take a stab....manifold + carbs + air cleaners + linkages = $300 plus?

Re: I've got twins!
Cheers, Stewart. I probably would have paid that but didn't have to. Oh and he threw in 2 extra carbies for spares and a brand new extra long choke cable. Toal cost= $152.50.
I am very happy

Re: I've got twins!
Congratulations on the arrival of the twins
Thats good buying mate,do yourself a favour strip them down and check the jets, power valves etc are the same size.Give them a real good clean and new carb kits through them. Have a look around at different linkage setups to work out what you want, I'm sure the setup on them now works fine but it looks a little over engineered (no offence intended). I run a Speco manifold and it like your Lanspeed has provision for manifold mounted linkages, I opted to link mine with the shaft and "W"clips for a cleaner look.
Consider taking the time to give the manifold a polishup before putting the freshened up carbs back on, its suprising how good these old alloy manifolds can look after a bit of effort. There is plenty of different posts on this site relating to jet sizes etc. and plenty of opinions which is great, if you decide to run them you really need to fit extractors or headers to maximise the benefit.

Re: I've got twins!
Thanks for the tips Mick, some very good pointers there. I do have the extractors, and i'm pretty sure they will fit with the Lanspeed.
As far as linkage goes i agree with you, the one on there now is a bit bulky. I really like the look of the shaft/W clips method, there's a kit on eBay called a 'progressive' linkage which i think is the same thing. I just can't really see how it all goes together. Have you got any pics of yours?
One drama i can see straight away with using that method on mine is that the carbies sit at different heights, and i assume they would need to sit level for the shaft to line up.

Re: I've got twins!
You have a spacer between one carby and the manifold, thats why they are uneven.UTEK wrote: One drama i can see straight away with using that method on mine is that the carbies sit at different heights, and i assume they would need to sit level for the shaft to line up.
I have the same manifold on the wagon, with the extractors I had to give them a slight dent where the manifold hit and stopped it seating properly.

Re: I've got twins!
Thanks Trev, yeah the manifold does contact the extractors slightly, but at the point on the manifold where they hit there is a kind of lump poking out of the manifold, so i think if i just grind that flush they should fit nicely. Or like you said just dent the extractors.
As far as th spacer and carby level, because of the upward angle of the manifold the spacer actually makes them closer to being level than if there was no spacer/two spacers. Maybe i just need a different thickness of spacer?

Re: I've got twins!
Grinding the manifold should work, just make sure it's thick enough .
The carbies wouldn't have to be dead level if you want to use the w clamps, they are a little flexable.

Re: I've got twins!
If you look at the first pic of the carbies you can sort of see the lump bits i'm talking about. There's one directly under each carb on the underside of the manifold. Why they are there has got me stumped but it looks like i'll be able to grind a fair bit off and still maintain the same thickness as the rest of the manifold.
I'll post another photo that better shows the carb level and see what ya think Trev
Cheers

Re: I've got twins!
Score!!! Do yourself a favour and buy either a Unisyn or stethoscope to help tuning them. I use a unisyn to balance the carbs on the roadster and am pretty happy with the results.

Re: I've got twins!
American auto parts do a linkage kit for twin strombergs.
https://www.americanautos.com.au/secure.html
Ive just bought a twin manifold setup myself that hasn't got any linkages
so have been looking into making some but these ones look ok and easy to set up.

Re: I've got twins!
I agree. If you really want something, who cares what it cost!
You can always work overtime, sell something etc to come by money, but rare Holden accessories are better than money in the bank.
I bought a set of scratch plates this year for $500. Who would have imagined they would be that expensive.
The last set I sold 15 years ago I sold for $200 so I suppose it is relevant
Glad to have a set.

Re: I've got twins!
I love your view Paul, and i agree, but i just can't always make things happen quite the way i'd like.
Dan- thanks for the tip but i couldn't find the linkage on Americanautos's, at least not a photo anyway. Have you seen the 'progressive' twin stromberg one on ebay? If so does it look similar?
And DR, i still can't find out what the hell a unisys is and even if i did know i wouldn't have a clue how to use one, however my fiance is a nurse and has a couple stethoscopes, maybe someone needs to start a thread on ear tuning carbies?

Re: I've got twins!
It doesnt help I typed Unisys instead of Unisync....
Photobucket and my computer aren't on talking terms just this minute so will try later to post a pic of one.
