I bought my first Car at 14, my mum hit the roof.. :D It was thirty dollars & it was parked in the house next door to the school. I had to push it home of corse.

I had just seen an episode of the Partridge Family where Keith buys his first Car & I was in!

It was 1974, the car was a HD Holden & my Dad said what do you want that old thing for.... Thinking back it was only nine years old!!!

Anyway, I had a car way before I was out looking at the Bankstown Square Car Show :) :) :)

The obsession started long ago. I am showing my age now

Hey Steve,
How good was that show @ the Square, 2 levels of shear street rod material and the upper level car park was a show in itself, Smooth would remember that 1 quite well being a local as myself. There were many a good car show at the Square back in the day as well as Roselands Plaza. They used to have a good 1 also at the pier near Drumoyne

All who are passionate about a particular set of wheels will always come from the rodders idea, or of whom built vehicles they like or are similar to, or the family members whom have had there vehicles previous, and want to carry on tradition and either keep them stock looking or modified,! or if your a Ratbox, Totally enhance the character of the vehicle.
Influence is always the key driver in any aspect of vehicle choice and modification.
I personally have always liked the EK holden over others and my next would be the Torana A9X Hatchback.(though I don't have the latter) I like and still enjoy going to shows were others have there passions on display, Regardless of what make or model, I am an enthusiast and thats what I like. Only the other day I was parked in Town and a couple of bruisers walked passed and mentioned that my ride was shitbox, they jumped into &*#@ laser and drove off, now unless there got something better at home, its only here say, you shrug it off your back. Thats why its such a great day for all to be associated with the same the make and model, Hense the Nationals.

thats funny, they call yor car a shitbx  then get in a laser and drive off  , even IF they had something better at home they were still driving a laser
i used to get a simular thing with the convertable all sorts of dropkiks would be drooling all over it on nice days, but get caught out in the rain all of a suden the same people are saying stuff like argh look at the dick head in the car with no roof
car people is something i think you are born with, my whole life seems to revolve around cars yet others it's just something to get to the shops, and sometimes they crossover sometimes good results (adam lebreese) usually bad, alot of money thrown at the wrong car or find out they don't like driving an old car as with the guy that bought my old sedan

Tim, you have a very simular story to mine, both obsessed from a very young age :D Still obsessed & still young. :D :D :D

Tocumwal was a great! Do you remember that light green FB with the white flash in the guys garage down there with 42,000 miles, think he wanted $3,500 non of us bought it

Smooth, I got the Hillman minx by a loan default from a mate. It was lowered, super wide wheels & the police didn't like it :) :) :)

Smooth, 1982 for you & 1985 for Tim, my first EK was 1985. Pyramid Coral / Barrier Coral lid.

In 1976 I use to get a lift to work from St Marys to Dee Why in a very hotted silver metallic EK Ute. The other guy I worked & got a lift occasionally with had a Seaforth Green EK Standard with a LOUD Hot Dog muffler :D I had eight EH Holden's at that time & it took nine years to get into an EK!

That's pretty sad!!
Sad? Not at all. Some, like me, would envy the experience (and frustrations?) you have gained from driving / building and maintaining such an old car for such a long time.

I've just bought my first FB and if my quick maths is right we are of similar vintage (err you and I not the car and I). I've had it a couple of weeks and it needs work. I'm lost without my overly generous mates who have the knowledge to help me. I start small jobs and it takes me hours to go through the shop manual and figure out even the simplest of things. Things my mates and most who will read this, could figure out in minutes. But I'm learning, and loving it.

Sad? No way :)

Gents,
84 was the year I saw the light. Capricorn Coral with a white roof EK.
Started stock then the hot grey, eventually a hot red. Several gearbox changes led me to the unbeatable aussie 4 speed  . Lost count by this stage at how many diffs I disposed of at lights but I could beat most EHs and I remember a 253 Torana PFFFFFFFF!
The car off the road at this stage as I ventured into the FB ute craze (will try and find a photo). I sold it to a guy from the Army and never heard of it again.
A wife a house and a couple of kids later I embarked on the historic racing with the Studebaker and I can say its the best fun Ive ever had.
The EK is now getting a makeover (chev ek) with a real engine of course  Just lucky I never sold it its been undercover for the last 15 years of its life so deserves to pound the pavement once again, hopefully in time for Yamba!

Regards Greg

My first EK was the one out of " running on empty" - I worked for the film company and wanted to buy the `57 but couldnt raise the $8000  required to buy it so I bought the EK for $1500. This was in 1981 and I was 17. Got my licence in it and proceeded to thim out stock of axles and gearboxes at the wreckers in the sutherland shire area for the next six months until the mighty grey cried enough doing rollbacks when pissed out the front of Sylvania pub , the things we do eh ?
I started with nothing and still have most of it left.

Hi Jay, sorry I missed your post, I was getting all fuzzy about FB 219's in Honey Beige!

That's great Jay, I had the same thing happen with my first car, the HD. It had the dizzy cap fail so the guy tried new leads & put them on the wrong way. A bit of fresh fuel, leads on the RIGHT way :) Bingo!

Yes, I moved to ST Marys when I was five. Lived in Nth St Marys until I went on the road in bands at nineteen. I was known then for EH's. All those FJ's in Rooty Hill do ring a bell. I have only owned two FJ's, a sedan & a Panel Van.

Hi Greg, great story, Hope to see the Chev EK at Yamba, is it still Cap Coral?

Hey Mick, I remember Government Road. In the '60's it was called Commonwealth Rd, in the eighties it became Foresters Rd...Go Figure. Ah.. you rolled the EK, that's where you got the obsession of lowered lids
:D :D :D :D

Hi Blacky, $1,500 was a lot for an EK in 1981. Do you still have the car?
