Bigbird,
I've being doing some internet hunting of late to better understand my own grey (and working out how to fit the heater to it). In terms of identifying the block:
· FX numbers started at 1001
· FJ numbers started at 121694
· FE numbers started at L283373
· FC numbers at L439507
· FB numbers started at B1001
· EK numbers started at B175814
· EJ numbers started at J1001
As well as changing engine blocks in the vehicle, it’s also possible that the cylinder head, thermostat housing and water pump may have been changed over time (eg FE block with EJ head). As a guide:
FX and FJ: small plug in lower thermostat housing for heater return hose, one hole in cylinder head (for temperature idiot-light switch), plug in water pump housing for heater supply line.
FE and FC: 3/8" plug in lower thermostat housing for heater return hose, one hole in cylinder head (for temperature idiot-light switch), plug in water pump housing for heater supply line.
FB, EK and EJ: No plug in lower thermostat housing for heater return hose, two holes in cylinder head (one for temperature idiot-light switch and one for heater return hose), plug in water pump housing for heater supply line.
Note that most of the above comes from internet trawling - I may be wrong

, and happy to hear from anyone if I am

.
My aim (once I get the heater into the car!) is to draft up a decent "how-to" paper for the Nasco Warmaride heaters (including the info above) with lots of photos and hopefully a guide on how to home-make a replacement heater core. Still hunting for a copy of the original fitting instruction sheet though (anyone?).
