Thats the Nasco EX294485-1 Smokecreater, it filtered fumes from the exhaust and blew it back underneath.
A rare option fitted only to FJ and other early british cars up until now, never seen one on a later moder as they created a bit too much smoke

Seriously though, an unusual feature and they fitted it in around the generator. It will be interesting to find out what it is meant to do.

You've stumbled onto something few of us have ever seen before.
I'll share a secret with you but don't tell anyone else on the forum. It is a rare photo of Peter Brock's pre-production prototype "Energy Polarizer" he made as a high school metalwork project - shit that got him into a heap of trouble. Ahead of it's time back in '59 though. Pity it never took off
