Did Holden make a 173 size motor ?
Maybe a later red motor ?

I think it came out at the same time as the 202 in the HQ.

Started in HQ's as well as LJ Torana's and kept going on through into the blue motors as the 2.8 litre. Blue motors being metricated had them cast into the block as 2.8 instead of the old measurement 173.

Think that some of the later reds in the HZ/ early commodore ?? also had the casting as 2.8 as well but not sure of the changover date.

Forum member Dr Terry would know.
I can't think what to write here so this will do.

Thanks for the feedback. :D :D

Yes, I now remember my brother in law having a HQ sedan, manual with a 173 engine. Just had a mental block.

I was looking at red motors for my EK.

Hi Finny :)
i put a 173 in my ek sedan after the
original grey got to smokey
and it went really well it had a mild cam
in it i put a 4 speed box behind it and she
went like a rocket probably better then the 186
i have in it now so i can recomend a 173 red
it came out of a torana if that helps . just make
sure if your using the original gearbox get a heavy
duty clutch .

the 173 is like the 202 as in both have un-adjustable tappets, they have the alloy bridge holding the rockers,
all other red motors have the adjustable tappets.
cheers dan

Many people believe the 173 to be the best, strongest holden 6 available,
They came out in the VH commodore as a blue also, the 2.85 model.. i think would be the pick if you wanted to work a stocky 8)

I had a 173 in my EK for about 4 years and it had adjustable rockers, must have been changed at some stage, Trev 8) .
