What are the best brands of acrylic paint?

I've bought the Motorspray bog, thinners, putty and primer to do all the messy bodywork stuff. Just wondering what quality brand acrylic paint to use for the final primer coat, colour coats and clear. I know SunnyTim recommended Ronson and Devilrod said something about "protec".

Any and all recommendations welcome.

Nah wouldn't be me with the protec. We used Motor Spray for the white (comes from the same factory as PPG!!) and Spray Chief for the Candy.

Can't fault the motorspray so far.

Ive been using protec for years without too many dramas. Their 2K basecoat is a different story. Ive had hell with the mettallics delaminating.

I usually do all my repairs and then use two pack spray putty over them. I block the putty out and then prime with acrylic primer. Wet sand that out with 600 then paint the top coat.

The two pack spray putty is a lot more stable and less likely to sink back into the repair.

If I was doing a 2K respray I would prime with 2K primer over the repairs.

Thanks Dave. Unfortunately, I don't have the gear to use 2K putty. I don't plan on using much putty anyway, perhaps just over where the limeblasting hit the original leadwiping under the rear window.
The whole shell was done in 2K etch primer immediately after blasting as back then we were going to spray in 2K. We had a spray painter mate Ken who used to do $500 cash 2K paint jobs (plus paint costs and booth hire) for old cars that he liked... unfortunately he put down the guns a while back and got out of the industry... he said that he doesn't do those mates jobs anymore...

I used protek for the colour on my wagon (acrylic )
and carmaster for the clear and primer + top coat thinners
no complaints so far happy with the shine and depth




sedan i used a brand called debeer for the colour and clear
and motorspray for primer and a GP thinners for every thing
my first paint job still happy with the shine and depth

ive used protec for over 15 years great product, great price too, their acrylic super clear is awesome but you have to thin it a bit more because its pretty thick.

I forget the names, ut there's a paint shop in Alexandria and one in Chullora who stock Protec. I'll se if I can dig up the names. BTW, Protec has been owned by PPG for a few years now.


What you'll find is with some of the more popular brands that you are paying for the name.

Manufacturing automotive paints is not rocket science, and you'll find most of the smaller Australian manufacturers are owned and run by people who used to work for the big boys..........

best acrylic ive used was definately dulon, dunno if you can still buy it but.
my car now has "concept"

with acrylic a lot of its in the final sanding/buffing
sand it till 2000 slides then hit it with fine compound.
Then a Glaze,Ive found that shit loads of clear helps
as this is what you sand/buff away
