I was wrong about mine peeling away. When I went to paint the brackets I saw angle grinder marks that tell the story - the last owner obviously had to cut the bolt head off in order to get the bumper off - so I'd guess the nut was just freewheeling inside.

3/8” UNF. Yes, the tow bar mounts over the bumper irons. I accidentally “liberated” a couple of the captive nuts on my ute trying to get the bolts out. I had to saw access holes inside the rear to weld in new ones. Suppose I could have used nutserts but not as strong.

Thanks Clay - I don't think there's meant to be any serious amount of play in the pivot points. As it turned out my passenger side one is really quite good without too much play. After cleaning it up and painting it, I think it'll do fine. IMG_8801.jpg
