starting a restoration

Post by mat »

hi all, new member and I am just about to start a restoration on a FB ute. It is in reasonable condition has rust in a few spots, some bad, orginal grey motor. 100% complete I was planning to strip it and do it in sections as budget allows and I am wondering if any members can recommend, well, a couple of things really
1) is there a place to go that will do it all?
2) if there isn't, where do you recommend for body and chasiss work? engine rebuild, interior and upholestry?
3) is there a FB/EK memebers meeting place and time?
cheers

1) Try Tony at Classic Olden Welshpool - Hantke Place from memory. He is busy, but is one of the limited few who will do such work. A full resto will not be cheap.
2)Engine rebuild, try Favazzos
3) 11:00 A.M. on Sunday the 25th of October at the corner of Farrall Rd and Great Eastern Highway, Midland, which is right next to the Caltex servo. This is about 10 seconds drive from the corner of Roe and GE Hwy's eastbound, it's a Gyprock place or something and has a big carpark for a meeting spot. Made it a bit later due to a few people having sporting type commitments, hoping that helps to join in.

A cruise upto the Mundaring Weir pub for a bite, drink and yak, and then through the bush and valleys to Kalamunda, then the back way through to Karragullen and then Roleystone to my joint for more tall tales.

In a "current" car this drive is around 1 hour, so it's not huge, cruising pace around 1 and a half. I'm sure some people will have a hike to get there and home so I didn't want to make it too long.

It'll be a good drive were we can easily stay together as a group etc.

Or you could save yourself a load of cash and heart ache and buy our EK.

Sure it still needs body work, but is 100% mechanically good, interior has been retrimmed and is licensed and driving.

thanks for the heads up. Yeh, cost and heartache, always a factor, couldn't get rid of the old girl though, had her for nearly twenty years, took my beautiful wife on our first date in it, etc. cheers

I'm south of the river in Como. Not that worried about travel to get quality service. I am gone to keep her pretty stock, she won't be a daily. So I'm wondering how to keep from having put selt belts in her, does that come under special registration?

Welcome Mat. Nice to hear you managed to hang on to the ute over the years. As what Nathen stated you don't seat belts, reverse lights etc, just rebuild her stock and you will have no drama's with full rego. There is a concessional license which i believe is cheaper, but does put some limitions on use per year. There's no official FB/EK club in WA (any cruises or meets are posted hear) but the FE/FC Club warmly welcome FB/EK owners to join there cruises and Club .
I can not find the post, But there is a recent WA forum member who has had a nice resto done on his wagon. Maybe scroll through and drop him a PM as who did the work.

Can't thank everyone enough for the tips, I'll get some photos up soon and get feedback. Is there condition code or number system that I can use when talking to people about the level she's at. eg, 10- concourse, 1- a box filled with rust and a set of hubcaps?
