Hi stafkel,
you have probably tried this - but if not - the distributor drive gear is hypoid and you will need to align the slot in the oil pump drive slightly "forwards" of the angle you fit the distributor at - as the gears mesh, it will "turn" the distributor drive gear and also the slotted end.......

The good book states to have the timing set on the "ball" for No. 1 and rotate the distributor cam so that it is just about to "open" the points for No.5....... it should then mesh properly with the oil pump when fitting.....

There is a chance that the oil pump drive has moved at some time whilst you have had it out.... for some reason or other.....?
If you cannot get them to engage by finding the "spot" with a flat bladed screw-driver - the other option is to fit the distributor so that it is set for correct ignition, then turn the engine over slowly by hand until the drive drops into the oil pump slot.....

If this does not do the "trick" post again - and I'll try and think of something else.......

What ever you do - don't "force" the issue - they should marry quite easily and literally "drop" in with a clunk.......

frats,
Rosco

Stafkel...I had to change the condensor in the FB a few months back and to do this I had to take the dizzy out...that was the easy part...getting it back in to line up was OK but then the timing was out...I ended up having to 'phone a friend'...
