Paint prices WOW !

Finally decided on a colour for the wagon.
It was actually a Mitsubishi Metallic colour.
Needed 4 litres for the body (was doing the roof a different colour)
Wanted it in Acrylic, as safer and easier to do at home than 2 pack.
Paints are apparently graded into groups.
Group 1 is the lowest cost, group 2 in the middle and Group 3 are the flashy ones that cost more.
My preferred colour was above Group 3 ?
Just under $900 for 4 litres and I then needed to use a 2 pack clear over the top to get the right outcome.
Probably $1,000 for the paint just to do the body.
The Holden Silver (VY series) code = 470G was the same price.
Looks like I'm still looking for a colour, will check out my 2nd option tomorrow.
If anyone knows a good reasonable auto paint supplier, preferrably on the Northside of Brisbane, let me know.

PPG I think.
Tim, the guy told me and quoted a normal clear for another paint, but said that my first choice needed t have a 2 pack clear.
He also said that he couldn't exactly match the colour and that one of the pearls would be missing ???????
His language was a little too specialist and out of my league.

i think somebody was having a shot at you the only paints i've heard of at those prices were the harlequin colours which yor paint may contain hence the price
and if you HAD to use 2pak clear it wasn't acrylic as acrylic and 2pak are not really compatable systems

Those prices are actually out there.
If you knew what it costs to actually make the paint (as in raw materials), you'd be even more upset at how they could charge so much

Well I was quoted for Liqui Chrome Paint at 800 euro a litre but the system you paint it with is just your normal setup. The same paint they use on the vodaphone &*#@ 888.

800 Euro = 1500 bucks per litre
You coud probably dip your whole bodyshell in chrome for that much

Got onto MPA this afternoon.
They got the price down, but only quoted me for 3 litres, saying that would be all I needed.
They still couldn't do it in Acrylic, only 2 pack.
They advise that it is a 3 layer paint.
1. Ground 2. Base 3. Clear.
$823 from MPA. includes paints, reducer, clear but mostly 3 litres.
My 2nd option paint colour was the same again.
As I'm not going to paint with 2 pack I tried my local paint shop.
They have Group 1, 2 and 3 colours.
The one I wanted was a "Special Effects" paint. Premium colour and cost.
The did however advice that they could do them all in Acrylic.
$303 for 4 litres. Much better...........
My Silver colour was even classed as only a Group 2 colour at $159 for 4 litres.
HiChem is the brand, using AcLac Premium Thinners.
They need to order in the Pearls and special colours to mix up.
Looks like I may still be getting my preferred colour.

sounds abit better Finny
the paint for my wagon was $214 for 4lt's of blue metalic acrylic
$ 118 for 2lt's of white base acrylic + 1 lt of pearl white top coat
not sure on the price of the clear but i got 4lt's of that aswell
with base coats i find out what color they originaly use on the color
you like then try colors that are similar but much cheaper because
there not called a base color when i painted the sedan i used a main
color as a base hot house green then the vectra darker green
over that then the clear if i recall the base color they wanted me to use was much more expensive then the hot house green i used
some pics for inspiration
