5spd Indentification help please

Post by Thommo »

Gday Team
Can someone please identify this 5spd i've just aquired.
I have NO knowledge of jap parts im proud to say :D
But, I think I want to use this.
It was removed from a fb/ek fitted with a red6 and I'm told
it is a celica gearbox of some type with holden adapter bellhousing.

The shift pattern is, R-1-3-5
across the top, below ,2-4

Anyone recognize it?

BTW, It was given to me, I wouldn't buy something I didn't have a clue about :)

don't think it's jap looks like borg warner on the side, looks to have holden rear mount and cable clutch set up and looks like commodore gear knob so i'de guess a factory commodore box possably :?

Thanks fellas.

It does have borg warner cast on it, thats the thing I twigged with,
I thought the japs would have made their own.

Cable clutch is no good to me though, i'd prefer hydraulic.

Is there a hydraulic conversion avaliable for this box, or
can I just change the clutch fork over and bolt on a slave cylinder?

Thanks for your help so far guys 8)

Its also the 5 speed Bog Warmer ( Borg Warner  ) gearbox that was fitted to the Starfire 4 ( Holden 4 cylinder ) engines as fitted to Toyota Coronas in the '80's so yes they did have a Jap application ( well, sort of :? ).

Remember them well when I was a mechanic at a Toyota dealership way back then.

Ok, so far we know its a Commodore Borg Warner 5 spd
which was also fitted to the Starfire 4 ( Holden 4 cylinder )
engines as fitted to Toyota Coronas in the '80's.

Thanks so far,( Oh, except you mark  )

Is it a T5 gearbox, or are they from the later models?

Can I get a Hydraulic clutch conversion for this box, or
can I just change the clutch fork over and bolt on a slave cylinder?

Cheers

We only used to call them the Bog Warmer 5 speed box Thommo, don't think it was ever called the T5 as I think from memory they were a later box ( I'm not really a gearbox ID expert ).

Happy to be corrected if I'm wrong.

I think Reddo had one of these a while back and asked the same kind of question as you, re hydraulic conversion, and didn't really get anywhere with it as I recall.

I would be surprised that there wasn't a conversion kit out there for them as there is still are a fair few of them around.

I'd be having a chat to either Dellow Automotive in Violet street,Revesby, Sydney or maybe Castlemaine Rod Shop and they should be able to correctly ID the real name of the box over the phone and whether there is a kit for them into early Holden.

In the meantime I'll see if I can find some contacts for them.

Seems to be called the M76 5 speed after looking through oldholden.com's "holdenpeadia" section.

Lookey here  http://holdenpaedia.oldholden.com/M76

Hope that helps with the ID and some additional info for fitment.

Cheers.
